There is an enormous bookstore called Dussmann on Friedrichstraße, just a few hundred meters South of the Friedrichstraße railway station. As for your luggage problems you have to sort them out yourself within the limits set by your transport company. I only travel with hand luggage.

Thanks. I doubt I'll be able to buy enough books to make the luggage a problem, unless I win the lottery in the meantime. :D But I thought I'd look at some Assimil courses at least. I had trouble getting my German course in the mail, so I thought maybe I could buy some of the others I want while I'm there. Also, it would be nice to go to a real bookstore again. They're so tiny here and have almost nothing of interest to a language lover. I often think back to when I lived in Philadelphia in my late teens and early twenties. There were two bookstores right next to each other that were several stories high and you could easily spend an entire day there.

Actually it is a pity that they didn't have it as a tickbox on the registration for to give a €10 donation for this, I'm sure people would have just ticked the box since they are already paying anyway.

Sounds like a brilliant idea to me too. I just suggested it to her.

She liked the idea too. It looks like they will try to add it to the form. Thanks for suggesting it, rdearman. It hadn't even occurred to me.

Café Tasso is a café+secondhand bookstore on Frankfurter Allee (U-bahn: Frankfurter Tor). The price? €1 per book. In the basement they have books in other languages than German, including grammars, dictionaries etc.

Café Tasso sounds great. I wish we had something like that where I live.
I also have every intention of going to the Gathering this year and hope to meet some of you there. :D

I am still undecided what to do with the Gathering 2016.

Should I go there or not?

Last year I have been mostly active on chess websites plus keeping my language Skype - contacts active and doing my VHS - course Norwegian.

I played a chess tournament of 4 days end of December 2015.

I recently had 3 weeks downtime because my computer was in repair.

Now I have the option to visit my penfriends in Northern France instead of the Gathering, but the train travel is complicated and I always have the fear of getting lost or not finding something during the travel.

Don't think you need to be a student to request assistance. You could always ask what the rules are.
