Extremely helpful! Thanks very much for the info! I have heard about Bengali literature, but I didn't appreciate its breadth. And I had no idea about Malayalam. More languages to add to my wishlist!

I had a friend in graduate school many years ago who spoke Punjabi, Kashmiri, and Urdu, but as your comments suggest, seemed most comfortable reading and writing in Urdu. Which languages develop rich literary traditions and which ones don't seem to be an accident of history.

Found these maps on MapPorn Reddit. The creator uses the 2011 Census Data that I used as well. I created tables and he created a map, which is more impressive.
