Dutch Golden Age paintings and painters (for Dutch learners)

Postby tommus » Sun Feb 24, 2019 2:43 pm

I propose a exposition and discussion (in English and Dutch) of the paintings and painters of the Dutch Golden Age.

A very good basis for this are the English and Dutch Wikipedia pages from which we can quote and post images, giving credit to Wikipedia. Of course, we can branch out as we wish, but lets be very careful about the use of copyright material.

The following paragraphs are from the English Wikipedia article on Dutch Golden Age painting:

Dutch Golden Age painting is the painting of the Dutch Golden Age, a period in Dutch history roughly spanning the 17th century, during and after the later part of the Eighty Years' War (1568–1648) for Dutch independence.

The new Dutch Republic was the most prosperous nation in Europe and led European trade, science, and art. The northern Netherlandish provinces that made up the new state had traditionally been less important artistic centres than cities in Flanders in the south. The upheavals and large-scale transfers of population of the war, and the sharp break with the old monarchist and Catholic cultural traditions, meant that Dutch art had to reinvent itself. The painting of religious subjects declined sharply, but a large new market for all kinds of secular subjects grew up.

Although Dutch painting of the Golden Age is included in the general European period of Baroque painting, and often shows many of its characteristics, most lacks the idealization and love of splendour typical of much Baroque work, including that of neighbouring Flanders. Most work, including that for which the period is best known, reflects the traditions of detailed realism inherited from Early Netherlandish painting.

Translation:

Dutch painting bloomed in the Golden Age, mostly in the 17th century. The demand for paintings increased enormously and artists had to distinguish themselves from each other. This lead to a great artistic dynamic and individual style development. The dominant direction is rooted in Italian movements such as Baroque and Caravaggianism, but tended gradually, under the influence of Calvinism, more to a modest realism. This painting style would eventually be stamped as typically "Dutch". In parallel to this, classicism and mannerism became influential.

Thematically the heyday of 17th century Dutch painting was expressed in pretty well all genres. Historical and biblical scenes, often allegorically worked out, portraits (both individual and group portraits), domestic scenes, interiors, landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes and still lifes: almost every subject had its own growth period.

The most important Dutch painters of the Golden Age are Rembrandt van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer and Frans Hals, sometimes complemented with names such as Jacob van Ruisdael and Jan Steen. To this day, painting from this period is regarded as one of the most important trademarks and attractions of the Netherlands.

Let's look at a few of the Dutch Masters from the Golden Age.

Frans Hals is my favorite because his paintings are generally very complex, with very impressive detail, almost like photographs. Rembrandt's Nightwatch is a bit like what Hals painted but not as detailed and vivid. I have seen the Nightwatch in the Rijksmuseumbut unfortunately I have not yet gotten to the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem.

In the previous post, I couldn't add a self portrait of my favourite Dutch painter Frans Hals because there seems to be a limit on the number of images. So here is his self portrait.

The Battle of Scheveningen was the final naval battle of the First English-Dutch War (there were eventually four). There are several different names for this battle.

The battle is depicted in a wonderful painting by Jan Abrahamsz van Beerstraten, a Dutch painter from the Golden Age. The painting can be seen in the Rijksmuseum. It has its own Wikipedia website:

If this story is correct, I guess van Beerstraten showed the Pelican in his painting with a bit too much damage.

Another giant in the Golden Age of Dutch painters is Bartholomeus van der Helst.

Bartholomeus - Self-portrait.jpg

For me, his paintings have the detail and clarity of Frans Hals. I currently have his De Schuttersmaaltijd Ter Viering Van De Vrede Van Münster as the background for my desktop computer. In the Dutch Wikipedia article, it is suggested that this painting belongs to the greatest paintings of all time. Make sure to look at it in its highest resolution to fully appreciate the detail. it depicts the "Banquet of the Amsterdam Civic Guard in Celebration of the Peace of Münster". A more detailed discussion of the painting is in this Wikipedia article Schuttersmaaltijd ter viering van de Vrede van Munster.

The Rembrandt Tutorials

The ING Bank in the Netherlands is the main sponsor of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. ING has supported the production of the "Rembrandt Tutorials" which are six 10-minute videos in which Rembrandt himself narrates the tutorials, showing his paintings and techniques. They have done that using FBI and CIA technology that is used to estimate a person's voice based on his image. And Rembrandt's words and sentences are apparently based on the Dutch he would have spoken in the 17th century. There are subtitles which appear to be modern Dutch. So there is a lot of difference between the audio and the subtitles. But both are interesting.

Very promising idea, Tommus. I just might steal it for French and Spanish. Could work with music, too.

Three Dutch painters and an Italian painter (and probably others) painted paintings with about the same name (presumably on the same theme). The English name is "The Abduction of Europa" referring to the woman Europa of Greek mythology who was abducted by Zeus. Other names for these paintings are "The Rape of Europa", in French "L'Enlèvement d'Europe", and in Dutch, "De ontvoering van Europa".

First, Rembrandt's rendition of "Abduction of Europa".

Abduction of Europa (Rembrandt)

The second such painting is by the Dutch painter Jacob Jordaens.

Jacob Jordaens

The third similarly-named painting is by the Dutch painter Peter Paul Rubens.

Peter Paul Rubens

The fourth painting is by the Italian Paolo Veronese.

Paolo Veronese

Belsazar (Rembrandt).jpg

This painting provides some sentences in, and insight into, an ancient form of Hebrew that has been translated by Biblical scholars.

Somehow I have neglected this thread. (I guess that is what subscribing is for  ). Thanks for posting these lesser known works (well, lesser known to me, at any rate), which are certainly not less in their artistry. And now subscribed.
