6WC: 6 Week Challenge Thread August

Postby zenmonkey » Tue Jul 28, 2015 11:20 am

Who is doing what?

As a reminder:

The 6 Week Challenge is a challenge to upgrade your language skills in one language from beginner to something more worthwhile, and to see if you can find more time to study languages when competing with other participants in a global highscore. 6 Week Challenges start on February 1st, May 1st, August 1st and November 1st every year, so there is a rough 6 weeks on / 6 weeks off pattern. Note that you can only do the 6 Week Challenge with a language that you're a beginner at or lower-intermediate at most. This allows for a more just comparison between participants.

Best of luck!

(Personally, I'll be working on Hebrew for this challenge as my beginner level language.)

I haven't done one of these in a long time. I've been trying to find time to learn basic Italian for a trip we are planning for next spring. The 6WC seems like a good way to kick that off :)

Has it been six weeks already since the last one! wow. I'll probably do Mandarin again. Goodness knows I need the practice.

I've registered as @Sam6wc to study Spanish. I'm currently at around B1 level, so I might not be able to participate for that many more times :( although I've been told that the road between B1 and B2 can be a long and treacherous one.

I signed up with Esperanto as I think 6 weeks of relatively frequent study is enough to bring the little I already know up to a fairly high level, then I can just focus on practising and vocabulary acquisition.

I signed up yesterday on Twitter for Spanish. I'm hoping between this one and the one in November (and everything in between) that I can actually hit B2 by the end of the year.

Of course I said that about German too.......

Add another for French. Going for a big push in listening comprehension this time, with a steady pace of reading, and a minor activity of writing.

I remember reading a post from a previous 6WC regarding "passive learning"--such as leaving the tv on a Spanish show, but not actively (i.e. making notes, using a dictionary, etc.) learning--more just trying to understand what you can.

The post talked about how to count it--like 10 minutes for each hour spent, or something, I don't recall.

Does anyone remember that? I plan to do that this time but want to track my time fairly.

Edit: Ok, I found it in the Nov. 2014 6WC--the consensus was to divide the time by 3.
