The Super Challenge - discussion thread 2018/2019

Register here
Super Challenge Bot

This thread is for discussing the rules, recommending materials, asking questions (including those about the bot) and basically everything that doesn't fit the registration thread. If we decide to do optional short-term subchallenges, they should also be posted here.

Tags:
#read #reading #watched #watching #listened #listening #film #audio
The tags #movie and #book no longer work after #Moldovan and #Tibetan were added.

A quick recap of the rules:
- The default goal is to read 100 "books" and watch 100 "films" in 20 months. A "book" is 50 pages and a "film" is 90 minutes. You can also do a half or double challenge.
- If you just have 5 books and 5 films, then you read/watch them 20 times. Though my guess is that by the time you have read/seen them 5 times, you WILL get other films or books.
- A film counts even if you see it with subtitles in your native language or vice versa (in your own language but with TL subtitles). If both subtitles and audio is in a non-native language you have to choose which language you want to count. The same goes for the LR method (Listening-Reading).
- If it lasts approximately 45 minutes (a show/series) it counts as half a film. If it lasts more than three hours it counts as two films. The bot counts 90 minutes for a film.
- You can do fiction or any other material – a documentary on whales, or a book about gardening works just as well as a novel.
- With parallel texts, remember not to count your native language. Usually this means counting 50% of the total text, or a bit less if there are explanations in your L1. If the text is in two non-native languages, you can count it as a half for each.
- A manga counts as 5 manga pages = 1 book page.
- Poetry/librettos count as 1/3 of a page
- For a children's book with large letters, pictures and few words on every page you count 5 pages as one page. When in doubt, use your best judgement.
- You can be at any level when the challenge starts.
- The material covered for this challenge can be counted and done in parallel with any other challenge.
- Podcasts and YouTube videos must have a minimum length of 10 minutes to count.

Graphic by jeffers. Green represents the original idea, yellow and orange are also allowed (but some participants choose not to count these), red doesn't count.

How about language families? How do I register for Romance languages?

It is:

#01
or
#Family-Romance

Families were a bit hit and miss last year, and the extension to use families is still a little Beta, but should work.
 I thought the bot treated them as new languages? At least whenever I accidentally tweet with an individual language tag instead of a family tag, the bot just says I'm not registered with that language. Which is totally fine for me :)

Speaking of that, kanewai gave me an idea. Would it be fine if I registered with Spanish and Portuguese in addition to the Romance languages? I would count the books in these languages as Romance but films as ES/PT.

Also, can we change the tag for Tibetan or remove it until someone asks for it? right now the tag is #bo which means the #book tag isn't recognized anymore. (You can still use #read(ing))

I think Zenmonkey is using Tibetan.

Yes, that is correct. I think a lot of the problems we had last time with the "family" was because initially I tried to allow the 3 character ISO code, but that all went wrong and had to change to numbers. I managed to get families working.

I just checked the database and families are listed as:

select * from Language where name like "%Family%";
+------+-----------------------+
| Code | Name |
+------+-----------------------+
| egx | Family-Egyptian |
| fiu | Family-Finno-Ugrian |
| gem | Family-Germanic |
| gmq | Family-North-Germanic |
| grk | Family-Greek |
| roa | Family-Romance |
| sem | Family-Semitic |
| sit | Family-Sino-Tibetan |
| sla | Family-Slavic |
| trk | Family-Turkic |
+------+-----------------------+
10 rows in set (0.15 sec)

So my earlier response about using numbers was wrong, although you should be able to use #roa or #Family-Romance .

I'll test this.

EDIT: please see later post in this thread with correction of some codes which had a potential conflict with an existing 2 character language code.

Numbers definitely worked during the previous challenge. #01 was Romance and #02 Finno-Ugric (not Finno-Ugrian)
I would prefer to keep them.

Wouldn't #roa be picked as #ro?

PLEASE USE THE FOLLOWING FOR LANGUAGE FAMILIES!

select * from Language where Name like 'Family%';
+------+-----------------------+
| Code | Name |
+------+-----------------------+
| 01 | Family-Romance |
| 02 | Family-Finno-Ugrian |
| 03 | Family-Turkic |
| 04 | Family-Greek |
| 05 | Family-Egyptian |
| 06 | Family-Sino-Tibetan |
| 07 | Family-Slavic |
| gem | Family-Germanic |
| gmq | Family-North-Germanic |
| sem | Family-Semitic |
+------+-----------------------+
10 rows in set (0.16 sec)

You may or may not have been successfully subscribed if you used the 3 character ISO code for language families. For example if you used #roa for romance families (the ISO Code) you'd have been registered for Romanian. (RO)

Where there is a conflict I have changed it to a number. Make sure you use the codes above. If it says you're not registered for that language then send a registration message with the correct number or code as above.

When we get the website up and running the list of languages and codes is available at the bottom of the page.

I will revisit the SQL function which deals with this and try to get it to parse 3 digit codes before 2 digit ones and I'll add both the numbers and the 3 digit codes.

I have a couple of questions:
  1. Should I count course materials such as Assimil toward pages read (possibly with each page of French counting as half a page because of size and English footnotes)
  2. Does a podcast count as viewing or reading?
  3. Is it fine to send the bot updates throughout the day rather than compiling everything together into one tweet for the day? Do you know if it's also the same for the 6WC bot?
Thanks and sorry if any of these questions are silly. I've never done a language challenge or used a Twitter bot before.
