Language: German
Challenge: half
Current level: ~B2
Comments, links: As I am currently living in Austria there will be no problems with obtaining native materials. I just have to find something that will hold my interest.

Language: English
Challenge: half
Current level: ~B1 as whole, with solid reading and quite poor speaking
Comments, links: I want to focus on listening, maybe I will do the whole challenge for this part. I plan to watch series on DVD (starting with "Games of Thrones"), listen to audiobooks and follow some MOOCs on different topics (programming, ...?).

Language: Italian
Challenge: half
Current level: ~A1
Comments, links: Non quite sure about ressources yet. TV shows and podcasts for listening, for reading I will probably start with some fanfiction.

Language: French
Challenge: full
Current level: I have already read literature without any problem so I guess about C1 in reading. My biggest problem is listening. I understand about 60%-70%.
Comments, links: I really hope to improve my listening skills. Books won't be a problem!

Language:Spanish
Challenge:Half (officiously: half for reading and double for listening)
Current level:False beginner
Comments, links: I'm so excited to discover this challenge still exists. I wanted to do it this year (coincidentally I was thinking of these exact dates) but didn't know the forum and in the end couldn't get motivated enough to do one by myself. I'll probably get my husband to register for a full challenge in French; he's fluent, I'd say. I just registered on Twitter only to be locked out after my 2nd Tweet to the challenge bot; hopefully, I can get back on it.

Edit: On second thoughts, I got carried away. The reading part doesn't fit well in my learning plan and life, as I want to focus on listening for now and preparing for a test. I withdraw my registration and will only do the listening part of the double. Hopefully, I will do the real challenge next go around.

For us late-joiners, can we include material we've read/watched since May 2018 but prior to signing up for the challenge (i.e. materials we've read/watch between May 2018 and November 2018)? I have been keeping a language log on another forum as well as keeping a personal language learning journal, so I have fairly good documentation of what I've done in the past 5-6 months.

Languages: Scottish Gaelic, French
Challenge: Full
Current level: B2-C1
Comments: more details once I start my log here

I will likely add a third later, once I've hashed out my language learning goals for 2019. But these two are my forever languages. I'll never escape them. ;)

I like we don't have to make it 100 unique items. That makes it doable for languages like Gaelic, where a lot of the media out there is geo-blocked, OOP or simply not available for people outside of Scotland. But it also makes it tempting for me to sign up for Spanish and just watch Coco en español 100 times. "Nunca le pongas nombre a un perro callejero. Te seguirá por siempre."

Language: Arabic
Challenge: full
Current level: A2
Comments, links: Since the fates have handed me a giant box full of Arabic books, it seems appropriate that I do this challenge. I will be including a TV series & 2 movies I watched this month prior to registration. Hoping to pass a B1 test next summer.

Language: Cantonese
Challenge: full, films only
Current level: ~B1
Comments:
I'm shooting for 100 'films', likely mostly from 30/60 min TV shows. As stated in the rules these are really ~22/44 mins without commercials and so will be counted as 0.25 and 0.5 films each.

I can't/won't do the 'books' part because a) due to the diglossia, there aren't 100 true Cantonese books in existence AFAIK and b) I'm focused on the spoken Cantonese language, not Standard Written Chinese and c) I have other tasks I'm focused on.
More to come in my log...

Was this mentioned explicitly anywhere?
I honestly think if the commercials are in your target language (at least subtitles) and you actually watch them, there's no need to subtract them. Sure, watching random commercials on youtube doesn't really seem to fit the spirit of the challenge (not sure about a 10-minute compilation of commercials), but if you watched TV for 1 hour it doesn't matter how much of this time was occupied by commercials if you did watch them.
