Welcome back, Solfrid Cristina, I've been missing you, and I hope we will see more of you here on this new forum. Sorry to hear about the troubles you have been through, hope you and your girls have recovered from whatever health problems you have had.

Josquin, I suggested starting a Russian Learners' Group in another thread, but not as a TAC team, rather as a meeting point for Russian learners to share tips about resources, study methods, post questions etc. However, I do not want to be in competition with Team Pushkin or a new TAC team if most members here want to do TAC. And I would understand if people do not want to belong to two different teams pursuing the same goal but in slightly different ways.

I am happy to do a small writing challenge about how I celebrate Christmas and New Year, but I am open for other suggestions as well.

As regards 2016, I am very hesitant with regard to participating in TAC. The buzz in December and January over on HTLAL was great fun, but apart from that I honestly have not found that TAC helped me very much, and I guess I have not been very lucky with the teams I have joined, but I do not blame anyone for anything, for different reasons the teams just did not function very well. I'd be interested to know how other members of Team Pushkin see things and whether they want to take part in a Russian TAC team next year.

December Challenge

As there haven't been any other suggestions, I hereby declare the December Challenge as follows:

Please write a text about how you celebrate the Advent season, Christmas, and New Year in your country - на русском языке. The length of your text is up to you, but you should describe the most typical customs that you and your family observe. As always, the main target is having fun with Russian, so use your imagination.

The deadline for the challenge is January 1st.

Have fun and удачи!

Sorry, geoffw! I didn't think about that. Maybe, you could write about how you celebrate Hanukkah and New Year? From my point of view, that should work just as fine.

It's great to hear about other peoples traditions though, especially if you're from Catalonia. :)

I can't speak for Europe, but Russian immigrants to the US were actually mostly Jewish. Not that I'm part of that group, though. Russian is also an extremely important language in Israel, only following Hebrew and Arabic.

Finally finished the "passive" wave with Assimil Russian, just in time for the end of the 6WC. December challenge still to come.

Due to overwhelming demand (by me), I have started a TAC 2016 thread for Russian. Please go to the sign-up thread to register.

P.S. - Yes, I AM still planning to finish the December challenge... Yes, I DO realize I only have one day left...
P.P.S. It only took me over 2 years!

So I had planned out and written an outline of what I was going to write for my December challenge, but this morning I discovered that I had lost it! I think I did well enough to reconstruct what I had intended to write, but it was a bit rushed. Feel free to point out mistakes.

And here - on the last day, is my December challenge entry:

Wow, 24 days of presents? I had no idea. It seems like a Scandinavian thing to put the national flag in a lot of places I'd never thought of. In the US we have quite a reputation for flag-waving (lots of synagogues -- and churches too, I think -- display them prominently in the sanctuary, for example), but I don't think I've ever seen or heard of an American flag on a Christmas tree, even at the White House.

I'd also never heard of Christmas visits to the cemetery. I take it this is a/the time of year for remembering family and friends who have passed on. I would have expected the presence of snow covering gravestones to suggest a summertime ritual instead (which many Americans observe on our Memorial Day and/or Veterans Day).

Happy New Year!
