EDIT/NOTE: This contest will run through April 1st (today) to April 30, whatever your local time is. On the morning of:
Saturday, April 8th
Saturday, April 15th and
Saturday, April 22nd
I will post an announcement asking how everyone is doing. You don't have to answer, but if you do, you will have until Sunday (the next day) at 11:59pm EST to post an update. On each subsequent Monday (10th, 17th, and 24th), I will post a graphic showing how many words everyone who responded has learned.
UPDATE:
Week 1 Graphic: https://infogr.am/april_vocab_week_1
Week 2 Graphic: https://infogr.am/april_vocab_week_2
Week 3 Graphic: https://infogr.am/april_vocab_week_3
All of your updates should be totals for April, i.e. on the weekend of the 22nd-23rd, please update with the number of words you've learned from April 1st, and not just the past week.
Good luck and happy learning to all!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi guys/gals!
Does anyone want to do a challenge for the month of April to see who can learn the most new vocabulary?
If so, please provide the following information:
Language(s) and level(s):
Estimate of current vocabulary size for each language, if known:
It's up to each person to keep track of how much they learn. There is no material prize for winning this competition, so hopefully people won't have too much incentive to lie.
Also, for this competition, each verb conjugation and noun declension will count as a separate word (eg "go" and "went" will count as 2 separate words). This may seem like it's giving an unfair advantage to those learning languages with lots of inflection, but learning things like verb conjugations and noun declension takes time, and so I feel that this is fair.
Let the games begin!
Re: April Vocabulary Challenge
I'm in for Hebrew.
I'd say my vocabulary is somewhere between 40~80 words, so everything is a new word for me at this point. I've managed ~800 words in a new language in a month before, so I hope to be able to match at least that.
Re: April Vocabulary Challenge
I will go for 900 vocabulary words in Modern Greek for April, as this is roughly the number left on a Memrise course I am doing, which is c.3,700 words at present. I am actually approaching 2,900 words learned but the individual running the course is still adding new words and new levels and has said he might even push the course size up to 5,000 words.
Of the words learned, I would say I have c.1,400 nailed down, as in I get them consistently right and correctly spelled (Modern Greek spelling can be awkward).
I probably know roughly 200+ words in Chinese (more if I were to count those that I can read but not vocalize/understand when I hear them, but that'd be cheating), I want to learn 500 new ones.
Re: April Vocabulary Challenge
May I join? As Memrise is a big part of my April goals, this might be a good way to motivate me. While the German path is quite clear even without the challenge (I am adding words as I progress through my course), there is a more difficult task:
Spanish
Known words? Hard to tell. Passively tens of thousands, at least various online tests told me so. No idea how big a grain of salt is needed here. I certainly know enough for very good comprehension level Actively: a few thousand and I cannot be more precise.
What am I gonna use: Several huge vocab and conjugation courses. I will use the ignore function a lot on too easy stuff. I have no chance to learn all those wordlists. Fortunately, I am likely to know majority of the stuff passively, just activating it.
Goal:2000 cards are a realistic goal
Re: April Vocabulary Challenge
I'd like to join. I'm going to be doing German--my current vocabulary is probably about 200 words. I'd like to combine pronunciation practice with vocabulary and reach 1000 words by the end of April.
I'll be using Memrise courses that have good audio and am looking for some Youtube videos that work on pronunciation also.
Edit:
I've gone through Memrise and Duolingo and my official starting vocabulary, according to them, is 431, so I'd like to end April with at least 1,000, but plan to stretch myself to try for 1,500.
I'm also doing a number of Youtube videos that can all be found by searching "Learn German Pronunciation"--I'm not counting anything from there as they will probably all be duplicates anyway.
Hopefully I will end the month with the ability to correctly pronounce new words without having to hear them first.
Re: April Vocabulary Challenge
It's 31.03.2017 23:28 PM in here, as of writing this post; so I hope it's still fine if I participate as well?
Language: 臺語 aka Tâi-gí aka Taiwanese Hokkien (a dialect of Southern Min)
Pre-April (Receptive) Vocabulary Estimate: really not much, probably not even 300 words
Goal: 300 new words
Mandarin has been more of a priority for me, I'm a university student, and above all a procrastinator. So, I'll be happy if I manage to learn some 300 new words (receptively). Since learners of highly inflectional languages have the advantage of being allowed to count each inflected form as a separate word, I may consider counting (phonemically) different pronunciations of the "same word" as separate ^^ (e.g., 阮 (first person exclusive plural) can be pronounced both as "guán" and “gún”)
