6WC 6 Week Challenge - Aug 2016

Postby smallwhite » Tue Jul 26, 2016 12:14 pm

Challenge XXII - Aug 2016

Starts: Monday, 1st Aug 2016 00h00m01s your time
Ends: Sunday, 11th Sep 2016 23h59m59s your time

The 6 Week Challenge is a challenge to upgrade your language skills in one language from beginner to something more worthwhile, and to see if you can find more time to study languages when competing with other participants in a global highscore. 6 Week Challenges start on February 1st, May 1st, August 1st and November 1st every year, so there is a rough 6 weeks on / 6 weeks off pattern. Note that you can only do the 6 Week Challenge with a language that you're a beginner at or lower-intermediate at most. This allows for a more just comparison between participants.

The three tags #ie #multilingual #linguistics which are all grouped together as "Multilingual" on the scoreboard can be used if you don't want to differentiate between several languages.

Also available are: Nahuatl, Ancient Greek, #ASL, #Cantonese. I don't know what the tags are for the first two.

I've already signed up with German for what may be the last time. Next time will most likely be Finnish.

I will probably get off to a slow start again. I will be flying home on the 1st and will probably be a little jet-lagged for few day after that. Once I get going though, I'm hoping to make it through a few more units of FSI Basic, work on the SC, and get cracking on my grammar book. If my internet gets fixed like it's supposed to, I might even try an iTalki lesson or two.

I signed up for Japanese. I'm a total beginner, having forgotten everything I learned in class 6 years ago. I hope to tackle hiragana and katakana, and the first six chapters of Genki I, and do some L-R with a cute manga that I bought. I'm so excited for my first challenge!

I think I will sign up with Dutch but it will depend on whether I can get the necessary books from the library.

My current level is such that I know Hugo Dutch inside-out but not perfectly: I can translate all its sentences, both directions, 98% correctly... if I get 2 tries ;) I learned everything briefly but drilled nothing in particular, so I will now target weak areas. My goal for Dutch is to reach a TY/Hugo/Colloquial kind of textbook level, and I think this Aug 6WC would be enough to take me where I want to be.

I'm also brushing up on my French because I now have French-speaking neighbours, yay!

I've signed up for Spanish again--I'm hoping to hit a comfortable B1 by the end of the year.

My goal during this 6WC is to work on conversation and verbs--which were my goals the last time too. I'll be using my textbook, my grammar workbook, Memrise and I'm not sure what all else.

I've signed up with Slovak, prior to a trip to Slovakia in mid-August.

For the second half of the challenge I'll mainly be focusing on improving my Croatian, as I have a trip to Croatia planned for the start of September.

I've signed up for Thai, in hopes of motivating me to spend more time on Thai and less time on Italian.

How about aiming to complete a course in 6 weeks? You can sign up for the Course Completion Challenge at the same time!

Good idea. I was planning on signing up for that anyway when I get back to Norway. I just have to look through my course material and see what would be doable. Maybe I can finish FSI Spanish Programmatic. (Though I'm signed up for German for the 6WC.)

I've signed up for French, in time this time :-D
(I signed in for the last challenge like the last day of the challenge or something like that... or after it was finished. X-])

My level is A something. In some things it's A0, some others it might be even B... Output is my weakest point, so I suppose I should work to improve that, shouldn't I? :-D

I could join the output challenge, perhaps... It's funny how easy and fun it looks when the language to be used is one I know, but in French it's practically impossible. Well... I learned to express myself in English, I'll learn to express myself in French too. Let's see what these six weeks do to my French :-D

Good luck, everyone!
