The Super Challenge rules and registration 2016-2017

Postby Solfrid Cristin » Sat Apr 30, 2016 3:51 pm

Hi, a reminder to you all of how this works

The Super Challenge 2016-17 starts on the 1st of May 2016 and ends on 31st of December 2017.

The 2016-17 challenge entails:

- 100 films (90 minutes each)
- 100 books (50 pages each)
- in 20 months

- You can do half a Super Challenge which would entail 50 books, 50 films
- Instead of one full Super Challenge in one language, you can also do two (or more) half Super Challenges,
and decide how you want to combine them.
- You can also chose to do language families.

To register, you state:

LANGUAGE:

CHALLENGE: ( FULL, HALF, DOUBLE)

CURRENT LEVEL:

COMMENTS: Any comments you feel like adding as to your reasons for choice of language, type of
challenge or material or your expectations for the outcome.

ONCE YOU HAVE REGISTERED HERE, PLEASE ALSO REGISTER ON THE TWITTER BOT (Link will be
provided later)

Those of you who will use your TAC logs, or who have created own logs for this particular challenge are
welcome to link to them as well.

OBS: PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS THE THREAD FOR REGISTERING AND UPDATING YOUR
ACHIEVEMENTS AND FOR GIVING ENCOURAGEMENTS TO YOU FELLOW SUPER CHALLENGERS
ONLY.

I will at some point make a new Super Challenge total reference thread. For discussions about the rules or
the interpretations of them, please go to the Super Challenge discussion thread.

-----------
If you are a beginner, you can start with the films. And it counts even if you see it with subtitles in your own
language, or even if you see the film in your own language but with TL subtitles. If both subtitles and audio is
in a foreign language you have to choose which language you want to count. If you want both to count you
simply see it twice. The same goes for listening/reading.

If you start out with the 100 films this year, I am sure you will be able to do the 100 books next year.

If you just have 5 books and 5 films then your read them 20 times. Though my guess is that by the time you
have read/seen them 5 times, you WILL get other films or books.

So the exact rules would be the following:
- Every film counts as long as they have at least voice or subtitles in the TL
- If it lasts approximately 45 minutes (a show/series) it counts as half a film. If it lasts for more than three
hours it counts as two films. I think the bot counts 90 minutes for a film.
- If you want to use podcasts or audiobooks, 1 hour and a half is the equivalence of 1 film.
- Every book counts. And 50 pages is considered one book, which means that if you read a real book of 500
pages, you have already read 10 of your 100 books!
- You can do fiction or any other material – a documentary on whales, or a book about gardening works just
as well as a novel.
- You can see the same films/read the same books again and again
- With parallel books you count the pages in your TL – minimum 50 pages to make it count as a book.
- A manga counts as 5 manga pages = 1 book page.
- Poetry/librettos count as 1/3 of a page
- A children's book with large letters, pictures and few words on every page you count 5 pages as one page.
If that seems unfair use your best judgment.

- You can be at any level when the challenge starts.
- The material covered for this challenge can be counted and done in parallel with both the 6WC and the
Tadoku challenge (so if you participate in all three you could at one point count the same book three times
- If you want to join later than May1st 2016 you are welcome to do so.
- If you do L-R it is up to you whether you want to count it as reading (in which case 50 pages would count as
one book) or if you want to count it as film, in which case 1 hour and a half would count as one film.
- Podcasts and YouTube videos must have a minimum length of 10 minutes to count.

But the most important thing about this particular challenge, is that you do this for yourself, and any material
you cover which you would not have covered had you not participated in this challenge – means success.

So ladies, gentlemen and minors: let not the best man win: Let as many
of us as possible win

I may have forgotten some of the changes which have been done to the rules lately, so if there is some changes which are not reflected here, do not panic, just give me a gentle reminder. If I have forgotten what I have decided, I am sure Serpent will remember. :D

Now go out and have fun. It all starts at midnight your local time. :)

LANGUAGE: French
CHALLENGE: (DOUBLE)
CURRENT LEVEL: B2 ish?
COMMENTS: Hoping to see another jump like I did last time in comprehension. I'm going to try to get in 200 films & 200 books because I read faster now.

LANGUAGE: Italian
CHALLENGE: (DOUBLE)
CURRENT LEVEL: B2 ish?

LANGUAGE: Esperanto
CHALLENGE: (HALF)
CURRENT LEVEL: A0
COMMENTS: New language so hopefully I'll get some traction (More likely to only get to a quarter rather then half)

LANGUAGE: Mandarin
CHALLENGE: (HALF)
CURRENT LEVEL: A1
COMMENTS: Really planning to concentration on reading mostly to work on the Hanzi. (More likely to only get to a quarter rather then half)

So I've already cracked the rules by putting in Double rather than Full. :)

And I am of course registering myself :-)

LANGUAGE: Russian

CHALLENGE: Full

CURRENT LEVEL: B1 (low)

COMMENTS: Happy as I am that many have had success with the SC, I am a bit unhappy that I have never had it myself. Third time is a charm, though, so this is the time that I will succeed in reading 5000 pages in Russian, and watch 100 films. I have enough material for at least three SC, so I am eager to start.

Best of luck everyone!

To make it official:

LANGUAGE: Spanish
CHALLENGE: HALF
CURRENT LEVEL: beginner (no idea which A/B/C level that equals)
COMMENTS: Just started after I studied for a year and took a break due to interference (with French). I've got a spanish flatmate so I just decided to not care about interference and just do more to get better and I believe that interference gets less when getting better.

LANGUAGE: French
CHALLENGE: HALF
CURRENT LEVEL: low intermediate
COMMENTS: started in school, forgot a lot, started again, took a break, started again.. you get the idea. I hope to find some hook in reading/ watching :D

LANGUAGE: English
CHALLENGE: HALF
CURRENT LEVEL: Advanced (like 12 years of learning and speaking. Using it almost every day)
COMMENTS: Though I am rather advanced I also have my fields I want to improve. With english this would be the academic and scientific part. So I'll mostly be reading scientific papers or textbooks about chemistry and other topics as well as watching MOOCs or documentations. That won't hold me back from watching or reading some fiction once in a while, because I haven't done that in a while as I've been lazy and reading and watching in German.

LANGUAGE: Italian
CHALLENGE: DOUBLE
CURRENT LEVEL: B1/B2
COMMENTS: Trying for a DOUBLE because I read fast and have well over a 100 Italian DVDs in my collection. My goal is to get to C1/C2 level

LANGUAGE: Thai
CHALLENGE: HALF
CURRENT LEVEL: A0
COMMENTS: I've only been studying Thai for a few months. I can probably hit the goal for films but it's unlikely for books. If I can get to even a QUARTER I will be happy.
