Hmm seriously considering signing up for the exam -- will hop into the study group during "Enjoy Esperanto" if I'm up for it.

Regarding the exams:

At the bottom of this post, you'll find some pointers on which level should be right for you.

I talked to Katalin and she said that if you are not yet sure which level will be best for you, you can sign up to two and start by paying only the first. If you fail the first exam, you then pay the second and take that one, otherwise your registration is cancelled free of charge. The cost of the exam depends on the level of the exam and on whether you live in a rich country or not, but for Westerners it is around $50 for the written part and another $50 for the spoken part, you can also choose to do just one part. See list of prices in Euros.

Registration: https://edukado.net/ekzamenoj/ker/sesioj

Starting tomorrow Katalin is offering several free preparation sessions during which she'll explain both the content and the technical aspects of the exam: https://edukado.net/ekzamenoj/ker/preparkurso

---------

If you complete "Enjoy Esperanto" or most of it, you should be at least B2, because B1 doesn't even expect you to know all of the tabelvortoj. See page 18 of this book for a list of grammar you should know for B1, page 19 has the grammar requirements for B2 and C1.

Here are some ideas of what you'll be expected to be able to do:

For B1:
Oral: present a topic you're interested in, and have a role play in which you advise the examiner on which souvenirs to buy.
Grammar: decide whether to use -n or not, turn a sentence into a question with a ki- question word
Writing: write a 100 word letter to a new foreign penpal introducing yourself and your city
Reading: easier than the texts in Enjoy Esperanto

For B2:
Oral: discuss the traditions in your country, or compare an aspect in two countries that you're familiar with, and have a role play with the examiner in which you complain about the abysmal quality of the hotel.
Grammar: choose the right preposition, affixes...
Writing: write a 150 word letter EITHER about your freetime activities and the movies you watch OR about your workplace, your boss etc.
Reading: like the texts in Enjoy Esperanto

For C1:
Oral: talk about social issues in your country, have a role play with the examiner in which they don't want to go somewhere and you convince them to give it a try, read a Wikipedia-level text e.g. on languages in Europe and summarise / comment.
Grammar: igi/iĝi, participles...
Writing: write a short comment on an article on a social issue (e.g. aging society) AND write a letter to a penfriend e.g. about your online habits and advantages/disadvantages of people using the internet so much --> both of these kinds of tasks appear in the second half of Enjoy Esperanto
Reading: like the texts in the second half of Enjoy Esperanto or Esperanto interviews, news articles, Wikipedia...

In short, if you're going for C1, you'll theoretically get all the knowledge you need from Enjoy Esperanto and our classes, but if this knowledge is very new, you may not have internalised it as much as necessary. Plus we'll only reach the end of Enjoy Esperanto on the weekend of the C1 exam, since it's the earliest. I recommend doing some extracurricular conversations, reading and listening - as I know some of you are already doing - and closer to the exam you'll also want to do some writing practice ("letter to a penfriend" and similar), just to get in the habit. For B2, you probably don't need extra reading/listening/speaking beyond doing every exercise in the book and attending our classes, but some letter-writing practice can't hurt.

Judith,

Here is the PenPal writing exercise for this week. Please look it over for errors.

Thank you.

Anna Löwenstein, the author of several well-regarded Esperanto novels and a member of the Akademio de Esperanto, is offering free "fun" sessions on Esperanto grammar every Saturday at 5pm CET / 4pm UK time / 11am ET, starting tomorrow!

Sign up at: https://www.facebook.com/events/2228226 ... 653478784/

You may need to join this group first: https://www.facebook.com/groups/464596177035738

The Facebook group "(Duolingo and Other) Esperanto Learners" is a treasure trove because several expert speakers of Esperanto - including the author of its normative grammar - are standing by to answer tricky questions and offer corrections. Just write something and tag it #KOR if you want only experts to reply.

Riĉo, that's a very well-written letter! I'll send you my correction by pm.

Sorry for the confusion with Daylight Savings Time. Our next session is Sunday at 9pm CET / 8pm London, which exceptionally is 4pm on the US East Coast this week. I believe that next week our timezones will align again and we'll be back to 3pm EST.
