Language: Japanese
Challenge: Double
Current level: A1/False Beginner
Comments, links:
I started studying way back in 2014, quit to learn Portuguese, and came back to it this year. I really drilled the Hiragana and Katakana, and those actually stuck pretty well, otherwise I've started over. I'm on a pause until June, but decided to sign up now.

Leaning into my tendency to make moon high goals that I probably cannot accomplish, I am signing up for a double. Unlike my Portuguese below, I am more interested in the "book" half of this challenge.

Language: Brazilian Portuguese
Challenge: Full
Current level: Rusty B1
Comments, links: Interested in the film portion for two reasons.

1) My listening is trash (I can understand some people in person... That's about it)
2) My wife and I watch movies together all the time, so switching that to Portuguese is "free" time.

I've watched 1 film and 1 episode of a TV series with her in the last two days. I've understood very little. My wife and I have a brief conversation in Portuguese about the film when it is over.

I do have some books I would like to read, however my main focus is Japanese.

Oh no I missed the start, and I haven't read anything in May!

Language: Romance family
Challenge: Double
Current level: Up to C1 in Spanish (the exam is next week!), lower elsewhere
Comments, links:
I would do a double in Spanish and a single in the other languages if it wasn't for the reading. I find it quite hard to keep up with it. I'm not sure what I'll concentrate on, but previously I have done a fair bit of Catalan, and dabbled in some Portuguese and French. Maybe I'll add Italian, maybe I'll pick Portuguese back up. Who knows?

Looks like I joined this forum at a good time! What a fun way to encourage more reading and listening! I'm game, too!

Language: German
Challenge: full
Current level: C1
Comments, links: 2 years for 5,000 pages and 150 hours? Let's do this! I've been absolutely needing motivation to open up my books, so this is GREAT!

A little late to the party, but here goes:

Language: French
Challenge: full
Current level: B2
Comments, links: I’m a bit conservative on my level, as I don’t want to assume I know more than I do, but I have lived my life in the language before, so I am comfortable (yet far from perfect) I’d love to reach the C1 level in receptive skills. I wrap up my undergraduate studies in December of 2023, and would love to apply to grad school in France, so a C1 would really be helpful. I’ve lived in France before and am confident in my ability to live there again, but I want to be able to perform at a higher academic level in the language. As I need to consume more media in French (written and spoken), this project should be the push that I need.

Language: Spanish
Challenge: Double
Current level: Intermediate
Comments, links: I ended up reaching my Spanish goals during the last SC (I kept track in an excel sheet), and I noticed some improvement with the language. I want to push myself more with Spanish this time.

Language: Romance Languages (minus Spanish)
Challenge: Full
Current level: A0-A2+
Comments, links: This will mostly be Italian but I plan to study other romance languages in the future. I may start Catalan, French, Romanian or Portuguese within the next year and a half. So, I'm signing up under the Romance family minus Spanish which gets it's own challenge.

Language: Mandarin Chinese
Challenge: Full
Current level: A2?
Comments, links: This is going to be a bit of a challenge when it comes to reading, but I need to push myself with Mandarin.

Language: Japanese
Challenge: Half
Current level: A1
Comments, links: I'm only doing a half challenge for Japanese because I don't think I'm going to push myself with reading intensely anytime soon. Also, I'm going to start by reading manga which counts for less compared to reading a book.

Language: Spanish
Challenge: Full
Current level: Intermediate comprehension skills, beginner active skills
Comments: I was doing well with language learning at the beginning of last challenge (and did manage a half one) until life kicked me and I gave up. I'm starting to get better, which is rekindling my interest in language learning and other hobbies (interesting how that works), so I'm tentatively registering for this one but I'm not fully committed yet. I have other priorities and if stuff happens, I'm prepared to drop out again without feeling bad about it.

Language: French
Challenge: Double
Current level: Depends on the topic, overall probably A2
Comments, links: If it’s a topic related to my academic interests, I can read relatively comfortably in French. I adore French literature so it’s time to read novels in the original!

Language: Hebrew
Challenge: Half
Current level: Rusty A1/A2
Comments, links: I need to be less lazy when it comes to Hebrew.

Super late to the game but here goes nothing! My twitter profile is @outofegyptlangs
