April challenge 2022 (pre-SC warm up)

Postby jeffers » Fri Apr 01, 2022 10:14 am

Around 6 years ago (or was it 8?) I proposed an April challenge as a way to warm up for the Super Challenge. Briefly, the idea was to create your own challenge to push yourself in one of your languages a bit before getting immersed in books and films in that language.

The idea is to create your own measurable challenge, work on it in your own way, and if you want to report on it here periodically, or at the end. By "measurable" I mean some way you can figure out whether you've met the challenge or not. It could be a time measurement, a number of textbook pages/chapters, scores on an app, a particular number of grammar points you could tick off, etc. Some ideas and examples of things people did (from my hazy memory of the event):
  • Learn X amount of new vocabulary (I learned 300 new French cards on Anki back then)
  • Tackle some tricky verb form
  • Complete a textbook that has been sitting there at 80%

I know it's late, but the challenge begins today! No joke  If you want to join, just post the language, your measurable challenge, and how you plan to tackle it.

For my own challenge I want to tackle some basic French grammar I've been ignoring for a while. I haven't 100% settled on the measurable part of it, but I'm thinking of using Kwiziq and/or Linguno.

Kwiziq: Currently I am gold in A0, Silver in A1 and Bronze in A2. I think my goal will be to push A1 to Gold, A2 to silver, and make some headway into B1 (perhaps attaining Bronze). I like that, I have three levels of success, a basic minimum, an achievable middle goal and a stretch challenge.
Linguno: I use Linguno for its conjugation drills, and find it useful for practicing verbs that I mess up in Kwiziq. When I was using it regularly I had decent knowledge scores in A1 levels 1, 2 & 3, as well as A2 level 1. Those have dropped over the months I haven't used Linguno (presumably they've added more sentences), so they are all down in the 50% range. I can work on getting all four of those sets back up to the 90% range, as well as getting through levels 2 & 3 of A2.

For reference here are my Linguno "knowledge levels":

This is a neat idea! I’m posting here now so I don’t forget about this post, but I need to think a bit about what I want to do before the Super Challenge. I might join you in a kwiziq mini-challenge!

I've achieved my "bronze level" target: Kwiziq A1 to gold. Along the way I have used Linguno to review verb forms which I missed.
My "silver level" target is next: Kwiziq A2 to silver (75%). Meanwhile I will go back and do more work on A1 occasionally.
