Yay, glad this is back!

I'm in for generic... I'm planning on trying out a bunch of (20) new languages next year so while I have a list, it seems excessive to post it. Of course, I can if asked

Everyone above this post should be on the list - let me know if I missed you!

Luna, I'd be curious to know what languages you're planning to try out, but I agree that it's probably excessive to include it on the participants list.

I wasn't going to do this but since I just started Euro Portuguese and German I will go generic though my focus will be on these two languages.

Ha, okay, so my main thing I want to do next year is try a lot of new languages (while only committing to one or two new full-time-ish ones) and also promote endangered languages, since the year of indigenous languages ends in, what, three weeks, so it'd be nice to kind of carry that momentum on. Basically, I'm going to try and learn the basics of 20 different endangered languages (gives me about 18 days for each) and I'll see if I want to end up studying any long-term. Might sound a bit weird of a thing to do but I'm hoping it'll go some way to curing my tendency to hop around different languages too.

The languages I've chosen are:

  • Scottish Gaelic (actually going to be one of my full-time languages for the year)
  • Ainu
  • Guernesiais
  • Nahuatl
  • Welsh
  • Māori
  • BSL
  • Cornish
  • Ojibwe
  • Basque
  • DGS (German Sign Language)
  • Navajo
  • Irish
  • Tuvan
  • ASL
  • Manx
  • Frisian
  • Romanes
  • Manchu
  • Breton

Had to give myself enough time to dig into them a little bit!

And oh yeah, since I'm from/in the UK, I put all my 'local' endangered languages down first—then spread them out and added the rest. Should lead to an interesting year!

Luna, that is quite the list! A few of those are on my list for future study as well. This year I'm challenging myself to stick to one new language, but I'm not opposed to trying some other new ones as long as I maintain the momentum on Inuktitut. Have you found good resources for all of the languages on your list? If so, I might be requesting some hints on a couple in the future.

I am also adding a block of generic to the challenge for myself. I'm not going to push myself too hard on that one - my goal is to establish a permanent half-hour-per-day habit, and I don't want to get bogged down and bored and give up because of that second half hour, but I do want to regularly do some kind of study on my other languages. German, Spanish, and ASL are my "practical" languages, so those are the primary languages making up my "generic" block. Might wind up with a pretty low score, but we shall see.

I've had a good poke around for resources and I think I've got decent ones for almost all the languages I've chosen—Tuvan and Manchu maybe being the exceptions. Tuvan's got a Mango Languages course that I can't access (Mango Languages only seems to be in RAF libraries here ????) and Manchu is majorly lacking in resources anyway but I'm hoping the fact that I know a fair bit of Mandarin will help me get around that somewhat.
