Challenge XXXV - Nov 2019

Ends: Thursday, 12th Dec 2019 23h59m59s your time

Sprachprofi wrote:The 6 Week Challenge is a challenge to upgrade your language skills in one language from beginner to something more worthwhile, and to see if you can find more time to study languages when competing with other participants in a global highscore. 6 Week Challenges start on February 1st, May 1st, August 1st and November 1st every year, so there is a rough 6 weeks on / 6 weeks off pattern. Note that you can only do the 6 Week Challenge with a language that you're a beginner at or lower-intermediate at most. This allows for a more just comparison between participants.

ISO 639-1 codes here

The three tags #ie #multilingual #linguistics which are all grouped together as "Multilingual" on the scoreboard can be used if you don't want to differentiate between several languages.

Also available are: Nahuatl, #Ancient_Greek, #ASL, #Cantonese. I don't know what the tag is for Nahuatl.

Putting the word "yesterday" into a tweet, with or without hashtag, adds the score in that tweet to the previous day rather than the current day.

The bot is on Central European Time, UTC+01:00, GMT+01:00.

I've signed up with Norwegian :D I've had good results with both Russian (August last year) and Arabic (August this year), so I'm excited to get started. I picked Norwegian for a couple of reasons. After all the hard, hard languages (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, in that order) I've been wanting to "give" myself something relatively easy. I think it's a language I can make a lot of progress with, with relatively little effort, so especially with the 6WC I'm hoping to get some good results :D Also, the language is beautiful and I've just fallen in love with it, and I'm travelling to Norway in January :)

@smallwhite, does this post mean you're participating again this time? (Should we be scared? )

Thank you for posting the end date. Last 6WC some of us ( :? ) were confused as to when we should stop tweeting to the bot and at least one of us ( :? ) might have stopped tweeting a couple days too early, costing that person in the final scores. :D

Anyhow, I've signed up for Navajo (I'm xgealicwitch). Last time was my first 6WC and I found it very helpful for breaking through with Russian. I didn't make it to B1-ish, but I did prove to myself that real progress with Russian isn't beyond me. I hope to refresh my current knowledge of Navajo and then build on it, maybe even get to a proper intermediate level with it. We'll see.

I'm doing Sicilian though I had to sign-up with multilingual since Sicilian (SCN) is not a valid option as it falls under ISO 639-2. My goal is to increase the amount of time I spend with Sicilian which has been minimal in recent weeks.

I feel like, smallwhite, you've been very absent of late. Nice to see you back! Apologies if you never went anywhere, perhaps we just haven't crossed paths? Anyway, I hope all is well with you, good luck with this 6WC if you do participate and good luck to everyone else!

@brilliantyears:
Good luck with Norwegian!

So, will be glad to join you guys. I'll try to learn Spanish, which should be relatively easy since I studied Portuguese before. I also have Spanish classes twice a week. And I life together with Mexican roommates.

So I thought it would happen automatically somehow with low effort, but it has been a month so far, and nothing really has happened. I very rarely found the time to study, so I thought I sign up and do it for real this month.

It is ultimately a quest of how to manage my time better and find the time for the things I want. Good luck to all of you!

In the past Judith has added languages on request, I hope she can do it this time too.

I won't be participating this time around for a few reasons including becuase I'm out of the lower-intermediate category for French in most skills. I'll be cheering from the sidelines though and now I won't be competition for Cèid Donn ;)
