Temporary Thread for 6WC May 2019

Postby Elsa Maria » Fri May 03, 2019 8:21 pm

This can be a temporary, non-bot thread for a 6WC beginning May 2019. I appreciate the camaraderie of the challenge, even without the bot.

I'm focusing on Polish for the next six weeks. I picked it as my Free-and-Legal-Challenge language back in March. All I have really done so far is get used to Polish, and organize my resources. I hope to really get going over the next six weeks.

In that case I will re-post my 6 Week Challenge plan here:

Focus language: ASL
Resource: ASLU
Level: Total beginner (only done lesson 1)
Goal: Work through as many lessons as possible, while being very thorough. I expect to at least get through ASL 1 (lessons 1-15).

I'm doing Spanish. I've neglected Spanish for months and so far the 6WC has always motivated me to do at least some studying instead of just watching Netflix.

!سلام

I am in with Persian. I am an absolute beginner. I do weekly classroom lessons in a language school and also study at home. Because the bot doesn't seem to be working I am going to update this post with my progress.

Edit:
Final score 44h09m :)

Did anyone follow through with this 6WC? I admit that I did not follow through. I did work on Polish (my stated 6WC language) over the past six weeks, but certainly not with the focus that I had intended.

Apparently, the bot was of great importance to my previous 6WC efforts! But if the bot is not coming back, I'll just try again to incorporate some sort of 6WC framework into my study pattern.

While I liked the bot and I missed the bot, I am not complaining that the bot is gone. I am reflecting not complaining. Things change. I certainly appreciate the efforts that others put into creating things like 6WC bots and the like. I can only use them - I'd have no idea how to make them or maintain them!

I did track my time spent on ASL throughout the 6WC, but it did not go well! I think for me there were multiple factors contributing to that. The lack of bot was certainly one of them. The fact that ASL was not my primary language priority was another, as was how generally busy/tired/lazy I've been lately.

In total, I spent about 6 hours and 15 minutes on ASL during the 6 Week Challenge, almost all of that within the first couple of weeks. I only got through lessons 2, 3, and part of 4 on Lifeprint.

I didn't even track my time :(
Apparently, I rely on accountability and friendly competition for a 6WC.

If the bot is gone and a new one doesn't take its place, I'd still like to try again on August 1. The 6WC has been running a long time, right? Does it predate the Twitter bot?

I think it predates the Twitter bot in its original form, i.e. people starting a new language using different methods and then comparing results at the end of the 6 weeks. But the Twitter bot probably started up around the time it switched to a "who can study the most hours in 6 weeks" thing.

During this 6WC I spent 44h09m learning Persian. This was just for fun and I have no intention to continue learning Persian further because of the limited time for my language study. I need to work on my French and also I would like to learn Japanese, so no more Persian for me. But I am very glad I have learnt to read and write the script and some basic stuff, it was a pleasant distraction.
