He leído Los detectives salvajes por Roberto Bolaño y me gustó mucho.

"Chécalo" is a horrible piece of slang from Mexico.
That's my advice. From my heart to yours, boys.

"Échale un vistazo" is like a "check this out." Not elegant but proper and very popular, since is a common phrase on detective's shows from the 80's.
Btw, "no manches" is like a "don't blow it." Used by teens honestly but I'm sure you knew that.

Thanks for your insight!
My Mexican friends normally say "¡No names! which is definitely a vulgar expression. When I made my username I went with the more friendly alternative of "no manches" which is often used in Mexico.
In Mexico both are used to mean something similar to : "no way" or "you're kidding me".
I hear both versions very often when listening to one person tell a story to another. I also hear it a lot on "Club de Cuervos" but that show is filled with tons of Mexican slang.

Hey, slang is beautiful. Keeps you motivated and conected with those around you.
There's people learning the language, and people living the language. It looks to me like you're actually living the language since your brain is absorbing it outta the people around you.
You need to be on the field, watching how they're using it, otherwise there's a million things you will never grasp from outside. Well, look at me... a native speaker of spanish with a wrong idea of the "no manches" meaning. I swear I thought that was another thing completely. However though I'm not mexican so that's why.
So do you live in Tijuana, bro? I have a close friend living in Ensenada.

Haha Spanish can be so different from country to country. Unfortunately I don't live near the border anymore but in college I spent A LOT of time in Tijuana and Ensenada (and all over Baja California). I sure do miss living there. Maybe one day I'll return
