Free Taiwanese Hokkien resources

Postby T.C. Seiko » Thu Dec 13, 2018 4:16 am

Glossika: https://ai.glossika.com/language/learn-taiwanese-hokkien
Taiwanese Made Easy (5 textbooks with mp3 audio files): https://sites.google.com/site/tmemp3/home

I wanted to try out the new Glossika system, so I began to use the free "Taiwanese Hokkien" course. The pronunciation tripped me up (still can't say "How are you" after three Glossika sessions), but it was enough to arouse my curiosity. I googled for Taiwanese resources and discovered the "Taiwanese Made Easy" course, a five-part series with accompanying audio files. And judging from the vocabulary list for the complete course (85 pages of vocabulary), this looks like a very comprehensive resource.

I'm not sure whether I will continue study Taiwanese, but it's good to know that there are resources for it if I should ever choose to do so.

Bumping this to add more resources:

Resources for Learning Taiwanese as an English Speaker:
https://heystacks.com/doc/787/resources ... nglish-spe

A guide to learning Taiwanese Hokkien:
https://journeytothewestresearch.com/20 ... e-hokkien/
This includes pdfs for some books, but doesn't include their audio

Resources for learning/using Taiwanese/Taigi/Holo/Hoklo
https://tw.forumosa.com/t/resources-for ... oklo/77891
Forum post on forumosa.com

Glossika Taiwanese Hokkien:
https://ai.glossika.com/language/learn- ... se-hokkien
Glossika offers their course on Taiwanese Hokkien for free. However, I think Glossika is pretty much useless for beginners, so you'll need to try some other resources first. Also, some have found the quality lacking (see point 5B in AMHOANNA's post linked below).

Harvard video series on learning Taiwanese Hokkien:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jytHN13hvA
Uses the Tâi-lô romanisation and has translations in Mandarin
See also the links here and here (in Chinese).
Memrise course for the above (includes audio):
https://app.memrise.com/course/1091161/ ... anese-101/

Free MOOC from MTU that uses the English-language Southern Hokkien: An Introduction as a textbook
http://ocw.aca.ntu.edu.tw/ntu-ocw/ocw/cou/104S114
(in Chinese)
The textbook Southern Hokkien: An Introduction is more up-to-date than the Harvard one, but there are fewer free resources online dedicated to it.

Bitesize Taiwanese
https://bitesizetaiwanese.com/
A podcast series, starting from "Newbie" level. Includes episode workbooks.

Getting started guide from r/ohtaigi

Finally, a good post by AMHOANNA from 2016 on the chinese-forums site introducing the peculiarities of Hokkien and some of the issues encountered by the learner:

The audio for this is sadly no longer available. If anyone could re-post it that would be greatly appreciated.
