audio + text for Italian

Postby Ccaesar » Mon Nov 12, 2018 7:10 am

Hello everyone
Can you recommend some ressources for practicing pronunciation?
I bought the text and an audiobook, but I think immitating how a book is narrated might make me sound a bit too much like a story teller :D also I tried listening to the radio, but mamma mia do they speak quickly!

You might want to consider using a TV program. Repeating the dialogues after the characters?

Bought the Text and the Audiobook?
Ccaesar, as it is not clear from your above post what your current level of Italian is, I took the liberty of skimming through your all your posts and I came to the conclusion that you have made considerable progress to date. That is, from your previous posts on Italian, without wishing to offend you, it seems to me that you might very well be in the lower intermediate range or perhaps higher. So then, I presume that you are not requesting advice on elementary materials. Going further, it seems to me that your post is conflating two different issues. On one hand, you are requesting help with Italian pronunciation whereas on the other hand, you mention difficulty in understanding Italian radio broadcasts. I will treat them separately.

Improving Pronunciation
Although “How To Pronounce Italian Correctly” by Stanley Connell is out-of-print, it has received very positive reviews. Used copies can still be found on the websites of the larger booksellers. Another possibility would be “Say It Right in Italian” from McGraw-Hill. Nevertheless, I am not sure that this is the crux of your problem …

Improving Listening Skills
From a reading your previous posts, it is clear that you are an experienced language learner. So then, whether you are listening to radio, television. film or conversations – whether in Italian or Japanese – you are quite familiar with the difficulties that foreign language students who are at the lower intermediate level have with sheer speed with which native speakers speak. Added to the problem of keeping up with the speed of native speakers are issues of dialect, regional pronunciation, colloquialisms, quick changes in the topics under discussion (particularly in live broadcasts and in conversations), and numerous other factors which native speakers do not even perceive.

Improving Both Pronunciation and Listening
With a view to improving both your listening and pronunciation skills in Italian, I would suggest that you consider working ferociously, over a 6-month period, with either of the following pay-for-play online video language-learning services:

Yabla Italian Video Immersion
https://italian.yabla.com/?a=1059&gclid=CJHNuOeWzsICFeVj7Aod_SYARw

FluentU
https://www.fluentu.com/

Both services provide graded videos, replete with transcriptions, drawn from Italian media. In six months, you’ll sound like a local! Well, maybe …

Book2 Italian can be used for pronunciation. Also, check to see if your public library offers the online course Mango Language. Mango teaches pronunciation and basic vocabulary and sentence structure.
