Three types of translations I use with the bidirectional method

1. hyper-literal translation which is often grammatically wrong but what counts is that it helps to connect to the Spanish form/structure/meaning, the choice is very individual

2. literal translation (so wörtlich wie möglich) is mostly correct but not always good German, because in the bidir. method corresponding forms in both languages ought to be found

3. very good German style, DeepL translations often show this elegance, I do use DeepL because it gives you ideas, but overwrite/replace it heavily

An EFL teacher tries the bi-directional method to learn Spanish and likes it.

https://leahunnings.wordpress.com/2016/ ... anslation/

So, overall, I found this an incredibly useful and illuminating process and far less time-consuming and boring than I had anticipated. At the point where in my translation I was reaching 95% accuracy, I let it go, although others might prefer to keep on going to 100% I found that I was wanting to move on from the text by this point. Careful text selection is vital, but I found that a range of text genres were appropriate for my own needs: during my experimentation I used a news article, an extract from The Hunger Games, a diary entry, and a formal complaint letter. The main takeaway for me is that this is a method that I will choose to use weekly, alongside my other acquisition techniques but that I cannot necessarily predict what I will really pick up on during the process. I can easily see that three months of this, as Luca suggests, would provide the language learner with an incredibly solid base in a language, although I would like to try it in a language where I have a lower level (perhaps my cruddy German) to see how valuable it would be for lower level students.

Curro Jiménez RTVE series online

https://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/cur ... o/3704102/

Curro Jiménez was a successful Spanish television drama series that was first broadcast on La Primera Cadena of Televisión Española from December 22, 1976 to March 25, 1978.

Its main theme was Andalusian "bandolerismo" (bandit lifestyle) in the 19th century, located in the Ronda mountains. The main characters were four bandits, Curro Jiménez (the romantic prototype of the Andalusian "bandolero", El Algarrobo ("the Carob tree"), El Gitano ("the Gipsy") and El Estudiante ("the Student").

The series consisted of 40 episodes, in three seasons, and a movie. It was followed by a 12 episodes sequel aired in 1995 on Antena 3.
