BASE: Bielefeld Academic Search Engine

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bielefeld ... rch_Engine
BASE (Bielefeld Academic Search Engine) is a multi-disciplinary search engine to scholarly internet resources, created by Bielefeld University Library in Bielefeld, Germany. It is based on free and open-source software such as Apache Solr and VuFind.[1] It harvests OAI metadata from institutional repositories and other academic digital libraries that implement the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH), and then normalizes and indexes the data for searching. In addition to OAI metadata, the library indexes selected web sites and local data collections, all of which can be searched via a single search interface.

Users can search bibliographic metadata including abstracts, if available. However, BASE does not currently offer full text search. It contrasts with commercial search engines in multiple ways, including in the types and kinds of resources it searches and the information it offers about the results it finds. Results can be narrowed down using drill down menus (faceted search). Bibliographic data is provided in several formats, and the results may be sorted by multiple fields, such as by author or year of publication.

Using day and night – scheduling retrieval practice and sleep

Abstract

Sleep right after studying new material is more conducive to memory than a period of wakefulness. Another way to counteract forgetting is to practice retrieval: taking a test strengthens memory more effectively than restudying the material. The current work aims at investigating the interaction between sleep and testing by asking if testing adds to, neutralizes, or decreases the effect of sleep on memory? We tested this in one pilot and one experiment by manipulating the timing of the practice test as well as whether practice was followed by sleep or wakefulness when learning foreign language vocabulary. Taking a delayed practice test significantly reduces forgetting for both the sleep and the wakefulness group. An immediate practice test, in contrast, had no such effect; here we find the standard beneficial sleep effect. However, the immediate practice test leads to higher recall in the final test in comparison to a delayed practice test, but only for the sleep group. Practical recommendations imply two things: first, if students study in the evening, they should test themselves immediately after learning. Second, if students study during the day the practice test should be delayed in order to reinforce memory and reduce forgetting of the material.

For the translation of the comments below the video I use the pop-up "Translate man" (Firefox), it also has audio.

Nice! I had stumbled upon this a few weeks back. I just wish the prompts were in English, as I've read through the site and it seems like I'd have to study the prompts separately ahead of time before starting to use the deck.

This looks amazingly awesome! A lot of intelligence went into the author's approach and verb selection.

I also like that he lays out a suggested study approach and that the most common verbs are addressed right from the start AND that all the tenses are presented from the beginning. So, one verb at a time, rather than one tense at a time.

I'd been troubled a bit by the very gradual way FSI Basic Spanish rolls out verb tenses, since "in the wild", almost all verb tenses are used all the time.

In particular, Miquel Cervantes uses a lot of vos in Don Quijote de la Mancha. Understanding the verb conjugations should help a lot with that particular masterwork.

That makes sense and I think it's worth it. With Spanish verb conjugation you have to learn both the "when do I use it?", and "how do I do it?"

Based on reading the manual, there are is the visual cue the deck-author gave to each of the tenses as well as the Spanish prompt to help us get used to the time or mode.

I'm visiting my brother and Anki is on my home computer so I haven't downloaded the deck yet, but I intend to. From reading the manual/guide, I'm thinking he used the same prompt for all modes/times. If that's the case, there's only a few contextual phrases to learn and the obstacle will be a lot easier to clear than you may have thought.

I won't be surprised if there's only about ten contextualization phrases for the 4200 card deck. So really a tremendous focus on conjugation and a lot of thought into how to best drill that using Anki. (Not that there aren't aren't other possibilities). But just in reading the manual, one can sense the love he put into the deck creation as well as the manual itself.

I was visiting my Mom the other day in Assisted Living. It was around lunch time and the cook offered to "make a plate" for me. She even brought it to me in my Mom's room. She said the food had been prepared with love and I could see it in the plate and taste it in the food. Braut, potato salad, baked beans and a slice of watermelon. Simple fare, but made with love. I think this guy did the same thing with his deck.

I just replied in your other thread, but want to say that I find that the all Spanish context is a feature and not a bug. I spent quite a bit of time looking up the example sentences at the beginning, but luke is correct that the basic sentences are very similar and now I just look up words when the mood strikes me. (Don't be intimidated by the conditional prompts - the vocab is not very beginner friendly, but they are all just ways of providing an "if" clause.)

Due to the symbols for the different tenses, you don't even need the context sentences to practice the forms and you will probably find yourself understanding most of them eventually without much effort since you will acquire more vocab and structures elsewhere and suddenly just notice that the sentences are easy. If the context sentences had English, you'd probably soon find it annoying!
