SpanishInput wrote:Thanks for the explanation, Kraut. So, are you trying to do what Iversen calls "Hyperliteral translations"? That does seem very valuable.
BTW, Olly's video highlights the main problem with translating back from L1 to L2:
"Sé
cuánto te gusta el patinaje" is perfectly correct, and yet he marks it as a mistake because it doesn't match the original word by word. This method reminds me of those school teachers who would give you poor grades if your answers didn't match word by word what the book said.
This becomes even worse when you take into account the fact that some highly respected books for learning Spanish actually contain weird sentences that no one would ever say. If the student is anywhere beyond the first few weeks of learning, he might actually be able to produce better sentences than those in the book.
I think that Lampariello and Allen use the method only with beginners, I remember that Lampariello suggested continuing after the initial phase with native input (in French something like "Le petit prince").
I have found a clip with Allen taken from a German online course for Spanish speakers:
CURSO GRATUITO DE ALEMÁN: Día 10 - Wichtige Nummern - Nicos Weg A1 Lección 10 - (español)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqVlZ7bB8RkI do "hyper-literal" or even ungrammatical translation not with a third interlinear line but in two columns, literal and normal translation being in the same row.

https://forum.language-learners.org/vie ... 17&t=17293Alto, fuerte y bien plantado, se pasa ahí horas y horas todos los días desde hace meses esperando a recibir una limosna.
All the words that are coloured are mistakes in German: hyper-literal, word order ..
groß, kräftig, gut gebaut "gepflanzt", stattlich, er verbringt hier stunden und stunden alle tage seit monaten, hoffend ein almosen zu erhalten
an example: "horas y horas" should be "stundenlang" or "Stunde um Stunde", the word order in the middle is a complete mess
I use a translator (Deepl or Google) only and rarely to check sth I am not sure of.
Using Deepl right from the start to get L1 translation would lead to a complete mess when I do the repetition after a while.
On the same day when I translate I memorize and when some time has elapsed and I can't retrieve the text from memory I read through the translation.
