We know that listening comprehension in a second language can be improved by listening to podcasts with transcriptions and watching videos with subtitles. Since 1970, second language acquisition researchers have been studying the effectiveness of listening while reading. For example, Garza (1991) finds a higher comprehension rate because of the use of subtitles. Also, Baltova (1999) points out that reading while listening facilitates more vocabulary acquisition than just reading or just listening because “the exposure to spoken language, printed text and visual information all convey the same message” (p. 31). Where possible, we have selected websites with audio-reading and self-check activities. Other websites do not offer these activities, in which case, some are suggested that use Internet tools, such as comic generators.
