Hebrew Resources

Postby zenmonkey » Sat Jan 20, 2018 10:05 am

I was surprised we didn't have a page on the language. So here are my draft notes - to be edited over the next days.

(Currently just a brain/link dump to be cleaned up)

Books
An excellent introductory book is the Routledge Course in Modern
Hebrew. It has tons of dialogues and goes through grammar for beginners. The best 'pure' grammar book is Modern Hebrew an Essential Grammar by Lewis Glinert and it is a good follow-up to the Routledge course but is probably too advanced for true beginners.

http://ae.lms.education.gov.il/course/view.php?id=396&lang=en - a page with a number of archived issues of the (now discontinued) beginner Hebrew newspaper Sha'ar La'Mathil (complete with audio materials)

http://www.hebrewtoday.com/ - a service for learning Hebrew through the news (paid subscription)

If it's Biblical Hebrew you're interested in, can't go wrong with Thomas O. Lambdin's Introduction to Biblical Hebrew. It has been translated into several languages, including at least Spanish, Italian, German and Russian.

Possibly also of interest for those learning Biblical Hebrew and/or Semitic historical linguistics:

http://www.mechon-mamre.org/p/pt/pt0.htm - the Hebrew Bible with parallel texts in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese (the latter two apparently require registration)

http://www.adath-shalom.ca/history_of_hebrew.htm - David Steinberg's History of the Ancient and Modern Hebrew Language

http://slovar-axaz.org/ - a Russian dictionary of common Semitic roots (focusing on Hebrew, Arabic and Aramaic)

http://www.sagreiss.org/cantillizer/keyboard.htm - a virtual keyboard with vowel and cantillation marks (some keys might not be available depending on the browser)

Some of the resources I use:
https://www.pealim.com/ - conjugation tables of the Hebrew verbs. You may paste a verb, and it will translate it, inform about tense and form and tell you which binyan is it. And it is 100% free!

https://www.doitinhebrew.com/Translate/ ... =IL+Hebrew - a good translator in basic (free) version. If you pay, you also have nikkud and TTS for the words, phrases or sentences

www.iwrit.pl - for Polish speakers - very good Hebrew <-> Polish dictionary

http://mila.cs.technion.ac.il/tools_analysis.html - morphological analysis tool for Hebrew. It helps a lot in understanding grammar.

Since my last post, I found out some new interesting resources.
1. Podcasts by Ran Levy - various topics like politics, medicine, Holy Bible and, of course, history. Each topic has its own channel:
https://www.ranlevi.com/
There are transcripts available for every episode
2. כאן אנו גרים בכיף
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... 7%99%D7%A3 - a very good comedy about a family with three sons. Since I have 5 children I perfectly understand the struggle of the parents ;)
3. היהודים באים
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... 7%99%D7%9D - skits from Israel's history and culture. For me, they are very funny.

I have the apps recommend. The app name 'Ling app', you can learn many vocabs in the app, the app will put the word in the sentence for you including 50 units to learn. You will learn languages by playing games. The app also has a web version, which is the 'Ling web.' So, you can enjoy learning on your phone and your computer.

Recommendation only for Biblical Hebrew, not modern Hebrew, and for those with some experience of synagogue Hebrew

I would like to recommend The Great Courses DVD of Biblical Hebrew presented by Prof Michael Carasik, for those who have some reading and synagogue familiarity with Hebrew as I do. This is a series of 36 30-minute lectures, which I find the best introduction--I have attempted to start from several textbooks without success (they may be more useful with a teacher); one can follow up with details in thevarious textbooks/primers. I read along with bilingual editions such as those of Soncino Press

This comment is based on my completing 15 of the 36 lessons. I feel that I understand much more of the structure at this point. The DVD is available from "The Great Courses"; it did not hurt that they were offering it at about 10% of list price.

French language Radio J, have a podcast called Apprendre l’hébreu en chantant le dimanche, their online player doesn't work in my web browser, but if you download the MP3 file you get a (hebrew?) song, and after each line there is a French voice-over giving the French translation.

EDIT
There's also a Apprendre l’hébreu en chantant, which is perhaps a weekday edition of the same thing?

A word of warning: I picked up the 2nd edition, paper book edition of Colloquial Hebrew: The Complete Course for Beginners (published by Routledge in 2022) credited to Zippi Lyttleton alone this time. I'm not quite the beginner anymore and neither am I an expert but I can safely say the book I'm holding is a mess. So many editing errors, differences between the text and the online audio, etc. that I've lost count. It's one way to learn by spotting errors and deviations but a beginner might lose heart.

On a positive note, I enjoy HebrewPod101. It was easy to find my level and the courses that go with it.

Another set of resources which I am only looking to get into are the three books by L2 Press: Hebrew Short Stories, Hebrew Grammar by Example and 1000 Hebrew Sentences, all with parallel Hebrew and English text - including word by word translation and transliteration. Audio files are sold separately on their site.
