This is just something I saw at a library one time so I don't remember exactly how it was formatted, but it did have pictures and lots of short sentences like "this is a statue" "The statue is in the street". I suspect it isn't as thorough as LLPSI but it would still probably be a good resource for a beginner if you can find a copy.

I have been searching for a really good Polish course book for years and have never found anything even remotely close to the quality of what's available for other languages (the Assimil course is with a French base, so I can't use it).

Recently, Hedgehog.chess recommended the course: Speak Polish: A practical self-study guide. Part 1. Levels A1-A2

It's available as an instant digital download with mp3 files for the audio and it's very reasonably priced (currently, ~$12). I started using it last week and it is the best Polish course I've come across. The notes in the margin are really useful, and it goes step by step with the answer key immediately after each exercise. It's not dialogue based, it's exercise based, but it does a really good job of explaining and introducing grammar in bite-sized pieces. I wish I would have known about this years ago.

Also, up until now I've always bought ebooks and audiobooks from Empik but I recently came across two other suggested sites for ebooks and audiobooks that have good prices and some titles that Empik doesn't carry:

Granted, Polish is one of the less-frequently-studied languages for which fewer resources exist than for the more-frequently-studied languages. Nevertheless, without wishing to launch another referendum on the audio-lingual method, I would offer my opinion that the scope and comprehensiveness of the two major Polish courses below are comparable to courses of this type and calibre for the study of German, Spanish, French, Russian, and many other languages.

Admittedly, the courses below contain a few elements of vocabulary which no longer have the purchase that they once had. However, a discerning adult should be able to cope with these minor elements and, having assiduously applied themselves to the study of Polish with either one of these courses, will have attained a level of CEFR B1, thereby permitting their study of “Assimil Le polonais” as equivalent-to-native-materials (that is, as up-to-date, progressively-more-difficult audio recordings in Polish for which a transcript is available) and/or direct progress to intermediate-level native materials.

@StringerBell, subsequent to my comments above, having noticed that your Profile indicates a level of C1 for Italian, I checked the Assimil website.

Great news, there is a version of Assimil Polish from an Italian base !

You live in the United States, right? The United States isn't an option for me when I click on the drop-down bar... I don't know what to put there to complete the form -- the address portion.

Here. It doesn't look like it comes with the MP3s, though -- so I'll hold off.

Oups, sorry. It's written book+CD MP3 on the french amazon.
Given the price on amazon, it's better to be sure that it comes with the CD.

Thanks for posting that, Speakeasy! At this point, I think I'm too advanced in Polish to make use of an Assimil course (because I think those are designed for beginners and without being able to inspect what the book covers, I have to assume it's stuff I've already been exposed to) but I'm sure this is a good resource for someone who has a decent level Italian.

I recently bought a used copy of the Schenker Beginning Polish course, but I haven't started it yet. Once I do, I'll post my opinion of it on my resources page.

Eido, I'm sorry I didn't see your post, but I noticed that you found a way to buy the book with the CD.
