It's already very useful to find TV programmes that are subtitled. Most TV channels on the Astra 2 satellites have them, Spanish TVE Internacional has them ...You can find subtitles of blockbusters in foreign languages on the Internet and play them with your film on the computer using VLC player.
You can make snapshots to "freeze" sentences and then work with them.
But you can also extract the subtitles of an interesting documentary or a TV debate of your choice to study and work with the vocabulary in a more comfortable way.
How?
With an Enigma2 sat receiver, which you can connect to your computer via LAN, you record the video.
You extract the subtitle from the film using ProjectX.
http://www.chip.de/downloads/ProjectX_15629057.html
This program is free, but IT CANNOT BE USED FOR FILMS IN HD, ONLY SD.
Now you have your (already subtitled) film and the extracted SRT-file with your subtitles.
You play them in LINGO player.
http://oaprograms.github.io/lingo-player/
(https://www.reddit.com/r/languagelearni ... ng_movies/)
Nothing special yet, Lingo player is built on VLC player. Except this:
You can open a window called "subtitle listing", et voilà: in the right half of the screen appears your text, looking much nicer than your SRT file, had you opened it before.
Click on a word and on the left will appear a dictionary and Google translate entries (unfortunately not (yet?) DeepL translated ).
The words you click on are stored and you can prioritize them under another window.
--------
If you want to work with YouTube videos in the same way you can download them with
4K-Video-Downloader:
http://www.chip.de/downloads/4K-Video-D ... 72840.html
----
If you are interested in extracting the audio file of a film, especially when there is audio description, ProjectX can also do this.

Ha, I've made a mistake in the description. There are two ways to access the dictionary function
a) you can also access it while watching the video: just move the mouse to a word you don't know
b) open the "subtitle listing" window that shows the text in a scroll down function

A few screenshots:
TVE Internacional channel on Astra
The film was recorded with a common Enigma2 receiver as a TS video file
The subtitles extracted from the recorded video file with ProjectX
(this video is in SD, ProjectX cannot handle HD videos, but there are programs out there that can also extract subs from videos in HD)
The video file was converted with AVS4You into an MVK video file
MKV video file + subtitles as they appear in LingoPlayer
When you move the mouse on a word, the dictionary entries appear
When you move the mouse on a word and click on it, the word is pronounced

LingoPlayer can work with 2 subtitles of your choice
The "subtitle listing" space now offers 3 columns: dictionary/first subtitle text (Spanish)/second subtitle text(German)

A YouTube video downloaded with 4K-Video-Downloader. However, not all YouTube videos that offer subs seem to be downloadable in the same way - that is separating subs from videos.

It gets even better. You can click for the instant translation of the whole subtitle line that is visible at this moment.
When you click on a single word a second time, the word is pronounced more slowly.

4K-Video-Downloader allows only 25 YouTube downloads for free.
Here is the alternative:

A similar tool, but with less functions. I had to install Haali Matroska Splitter Filter for it to work.
