The Assimil course is amazing, it's the only resource i used for learning Catalan and had no trouble communicating, reading, watching TV/movies, etc. afterwards. Prof. Argüelles highly recommended it as well.

There's a podcast called Sobretaula that seems interesting. It's unscripted conversation where the hosts answer questions from listeners. For example, from the most recent episode: What is the spiciest food in the world and how is that measured? How much time do we spend at traffic lights? Why do people get tattoos? My Catalan is not at a level where I can understand very much yet, but it seems like something I'll enjoy listening to down the road.

Assimil has Catalan courses in Spanish and French

The Assimil course is amazing, it's the only resource i used for learning Catalan and had no trouble communicating, reading, watching TV/movies, etc. afterwards. Prof. Argüelles highly recommended it as well.

The Spanish El catalán sin esfuerzo (70 lessons) and the French Le catalan (100 lessons) are very different. If I remember correctly, the one Arguelles reviewed was the Spanish one. The French one has much shorter and less demanding lessons. On the other hand, I think they explain the grammar better in the French one.

I think Alan Yates, Teach Yourself Catalan (1975, reissued 1993) is an excellent resource. This book is not the same as the current TY Catalan. It's based on the old school grammar-translation method and there's no audio, so many people probably won't like it. It is, however, a very nice introduction to Catalan grammar and pronunciation (using IPA), and it teaches core vocabulary. It's a nice supplement to more modern courses like Assimil.

I had no idea they were different. I used the Spanish one (70 lessons) and thought it was great.

Digui, Digui Curs de Català videos on youtube

Digui, digui is a lot more than just those funny, old videos. It's an entire set of course materials.

There are two levels: Level 1 (units 1–30) and level 2 (units 31–60).

Digui, digui is based on the communicative approach. When it was first made in the 1980s, it was primarily designed for Spanish speakers living in Catalonia. In the early 1990s they made an "international" edition of level 1, intended for foreigners not necessarily living in an immersion context in Catalonia.

For each of the two levels. the following material was made:
Textbook
Audio
Handbook (only level 1)
Written exercises
Teacher's manual
Videos

The key to the written exercices book is in the teacher's manual.

What you need as a self-learner are the textbook, the audio and the handbook.

The textbook contains dialogues, oral exercices (repetion and substitution drills), written exercices and more "open", communicative exercises where you practise what you've learnt.

The audio is at a natural speed right from the start.

I think the handbok is an essential tool for someone using Digui, digui on their own. In the handbook you'll find translations of the dialogues, key to the exercises, grammar explanations, vocabulary etc. The handbook is available in English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. At least the English handbook is brilliant. I haven't used any of the other four. The handbook is available for level 1 only.

If anyone wonders why they retired the old Digui Digui course, I think watching episode 7 will make it clear. Not exactly PC.
