It is interesting to see the translation of "het omgooien van vrachtwagenbanden" which I believe means "lifting truck tires", because both DeepL and Google decided to change the meaning to some actions that are probably more commonly done by humans, such as changing truck tires or towing a lorry (Google went British). With their superior intelligence they probably thought lifting tires is too stupid and that it had to be something more normal. But Google completely forgot about the tires, so again it looses against DeepL. :D

At least with DeepL's version I could tell it was about some kind of group exercise program. Google's effort leaves me none the wiser as to what is going on.

:lol:

I agree wholeheartedly. I have tested DeepL on a difficult philosophical article and on the text of a children’s book. (E->F in both cases). I find DeepL absolutely tremendous. It doesn’t think, of course, but that’s not really the point. Its output is way superior to Google’s or Bing’s and even to the translation of the published children’s book.
I am a professional translator (retired from the UN after a little over a quarter-century in the salt mines :).

What I'm wondering is if Google somehow learned that "loose" and "lose" are often confused, and then associated "on the ropes" with "losing".

The way big data learning algorithms work hangs so much on the state of the data fed in.

Deepl misdetects Finnish ( Lyrics of Mimmit - Tanssi Poika ) as Dutch.

Let us try some German.
In this case, Faust's famous speech from Goethe's Faust Part 1.

Hmmmm......

"Hot Magister, hot doctor cooked
And I'm moving to the ten years "

sounds rather entertaining ( and may even be meaningful at a metalevel considering that he does make a deal with Mephistophles ) , but it is not an acceptable translation of

"Heiße Magister, heiße Doktor gar
Und ziehe schon an die zehen Jahr Herauf,"

Translated with http://www.DeepL.com/Translator
" Have now, oh! Philosophy,
Law school and medicine,
And unfortunately also theology
Completely studied, with a lot of effort.
Here I am, poor fool!
And I'm as smart as ever;
Hot Magister, hot doctor cooked
And I'm moving to the ten years
Up, down and across and crooked
My students are messing with my nose -
And see that we know nothing!
It's just gonna burn my heart.
Though I'm smarter than all the monkeys,
Doctors, Magisters, scribes and priests;
No scruples or doubts plague me,
Fear me neither hell nor devil
For that all Freud has been snatched away from me,
Don't imagine what right to know,
Don't make me think I could teach you something,
To improve and convert people.
Neither do I have good or money,
Yet honesty and glory of the world;
No dog wants to live that much longer!
That's why I surrendered to magic,
Whether through my mind, my strength and mouth
Not many a secret would be revealed;
That I won't be sour with sweat
Need to say what I don't know;
That I realize what the world has to offer
It holds together at the core,
See all the power of action and seeds,
And don't do anything else in words."

DeepL is so good at German that, to me, it's actually scary. I haven't tried the other languages but I imagine it's even better.

It appears Japanese and Chinese were added not too long ago. I've been testing out its Japanese->English translation, and I feel like it's a clear improvement over anything I've seen so far, especially because you can click words in the translated text that seem wrong, and select from a list of suggestions, and DeepL will correct the whole sentence according to what you choose, with at least one option tending to be a correct translation.

I just threw an article from NHK News at it and read through the English translation. This is the first time I've ever seen an automatic translation produce readable English from Japanese. I just dropped the same article into Google Translate (or the first part, otherwise I hit a limit) and I can see issues in the very first paragraph.

Great!
