Website to evaluate the language level of a text

Postby guiguixx1 » Wed Jun 14, 2017 6:04 am

Hi guys!

I am looking for websites which can evaluate the level of a text in a given language (CEFR). I already have this website (https://www.accessibility.nl/kennisbank ... iveau-tool) for Dutch and would like to find the same for English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Esperanto. Does anyone have that?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for that link to the Dutch text reading level testing tool. I did not know about it.

I tried a few tests on the type of material I generally read. I only tried about 6 text samples, but I was surprised at the results.

De Telegraaf news articles: B2/C1

Several scientific articles: B2

Transcript from a very colloquial (and difficult for me) TV series: B1

Maybe the TV series colloquial dialogue would be the easiest for native speakers. But generally, I don't think this tool would help a language learner determine what language material they should be reading for their level, or to assess their ability based on what they can comfortably read.

So I guess what I am saying is; If you use such a tool to help second-language learners, it might be counter-productive and misleading.

My tests and results are from a very small sample. I'd be interested in other members' testing and comments.

I've also been quite astonished by the level that this website gave for some excerpts I have given it to analyze, so it might not give very trustworthy results. Nevertheless, it gives an indication, and it's the only tool I have for Dutch for now ^^'

Readlang gives CEFR ratings. But in my limited uses of it, it seemed to overrate often. Almost every short news article was rated C2.
