ASSiMiL | A. Chérel: German without toil
Although this course was for beginners, the dialogues are—from a contemporary native speaker's perspective—impressively eloquent.

I'm jumping back on my language learning journey and I'll have to sift through these resources.

a comparison Duolingo vs Babbel in a magazine for the technically mnded

https://www.heise.de/meinung/Duolingo-v ... .teaser_up

An elementary German grammar, from 1930: "German Grammar Self-Taught" by W.E. Weber.
https://archive.org/details/german-gram ... weber-1930

(This is the second edition. The first edition was published in 1913. The book is part of Marlborough's Self-Taught Series, a British series which had some success in the early-to-mid twentieth century.)

The rest of this note repeats what was said for the French grammar:

There is nothing really remarkable about the book. But it does have exercises, with a complete answer key. So if someone is looking for some additional practice, maybe they will find this useful. (Unfortunately, the exercises seem to be of the disconnected sentence type. I would have preferred some connected stories or anecdotes, at least in the later chapters. I also wish the author had used the IPA, or something similar.)

I should also apologize for some of the crooked pages, as I struggled to scan this in. But to correct it, I would probably have needed to tear the book apart, which is not something I was willing to do. Also, to get a clear scan, I had to set the resolution to the highest setting (600 dpi), which produced a very large file. If anyone can compress it, without sacrificing the resolution, please let me know.

N.B. If you find the book useful, you might be interested in a similar French grammar that I scanned in:

One need not hope in order to undertake, nor succeed in order to persevere.
