Carmody wrote:Could someone out there tell me about CLE and Grammaire Progressive du Français.? Are the instructions in English. I need a good grammar book but I am not clear if all editions have instructions in French.

Also what is it that makes CLE so popular?

Thanks.

One other book that I would recommend as a grammar is this one that was recommended by emk Essential French Grammar. It is not a comprehensive book, but it does cover the essentials. It's a 144 page paperback and is easy to carry around. I call it my waiting room book, because it is the one I bring with me to doctor appointments.

Tom

Thanks so much for not forgetting me. So I will get that one and one of the 2 that you previously suggested.

Gratefully.

I have the practice makes perfect sentence builder book and the explanations in it are quite straightforward and simple. I agree.

Would you tell me what you think of the French Grammar- A Complete Reference Guide that you bought and that I own also?

Also, why do people like the CLE bks. so much? I never saw one.

I think that French Grammar - A Complete Reference Guide is what it claims to be: a complete reference guide. It appears to be a good book for someone who knows French and needs a reference. With the aid of a teacher it could be used for instruction, but I don't think it would be a good book as the first book for a self learner.

As far as the CLE books go all I can say, and this is only my opinion, is that they are popular in France, and French teachers from France are familiar with them. At least that was how I was introduced to them. My biggest complaint is that the answer book costs almost as much as the text book.

I hope this helps.

I don't know if CLE books are popular and I didn't know them. I think that in France Bescherelle are the most popular mainly conjugation and grammar books.

I call it my waiting room book,

3 cheers for waiting room books!!! :D

I was in the waiting room at 9am this morning getting ready for blood work and while there I was hard at work on reading my copy of French Verbs & Essentials of Grammar

I find the book particularly ideal for that and similar occasions.

3 cheers for waiting room books!!! :D

I inherited three volumes from my mother when she was learning French but never really used them until I found out by accident that some of the audio was on a French Language torrent that was floating around . . . legally downloaded, of course!

Some of the text of Book 1 — approximately 50% of the last half of the book — was either not recorded or is missing from the torrent. I haven't listened to all the audio from Book 2, but there is no audio for Book 3. Can anyone confirm if all of the text was recorded for the three books? If that is the case, for the sake of completing my collection, then I will try and hunt down the the cassettes or LPs.
The French national library lists 3 LPs, and Amazon appears to sell MP3 versions (mentioned elsewhere on this forum by Peter Mollenberg)

They are available from Amazon.fr but it seems I can't buy them with an Australian address.

Anyway, that's okay as I bought them several years back (as CDs) from Goyal Publishers (India) with the books.

Having compared what is available on Amazon (Audible) with my mp3 tracks ripped from the CDs, the recordings I have are slightly (a few minutes) shorter than the versions available from Audible. The beginning is identical, so I don't think they are different. Maybe slightly edited.
