I'm looking for free Android audio apps with features that are useful for listening to language courses.
So far I've been using Pulsar Media Player for Assimil mp3 files and Voice AudioBook Player for all other language courses.
Pulsar Music Player
➕variable playback speed
➕Support for embedded lyrics (e.g., captions in Assimil MP3 files)
➕folder-based file browser (optional)
➖ Audiobook folder is hard-coded (the app will only look for files in the Music folder)
➖ no skip/auto-rewind buttons
Voice Audiobook Player (F-Droid link)
➕variable playback speed
➕skip silence option
➕customizable skip/auto-rewind buttons
➕bookmark option
➖ no support for embedded lyrics
➖ no folder-based file browser
What are your favorite Android audio apps for listening to language courses?

I use Musicolet for all my listening needs. I think it has all the positive features you mention from the ones you use, but I'm not 100% sure. I actually use it to listen to audiobooks, or general music, but I find it organizes info well.

Re: Recommendations for free Android audio apps
Thanks for the recommendation! I don't know any other audio app with .srt support.
I'm thinking of having Whisper AI generate .srt files for foreign language audio books and using the app for listening-reading.

Smart Audiobook player is not bad - not beautiful, but relatively feature-rich.
➕Variable playback speed
➕Can choose multiple audiobook folders
➕Skip/rewind buttons (2 of each as default, at 1 minute and 10 seconds respectively, and I think the time is editable)
➕Repeat button (very important for languages!)
➕Bookmark option
➖ Repeat cannot work on units smaller than whole files.
➖ No support for embedded lyrics (e.g., captions in Assimil MP3 files) (I think)
➖ Not pretty/interface that takes a little learning
➖ Library Management slightly clunky
➖ No time tracking (I loved this feature when I used LingQ...)
It's not perfect, but definitely a pretty solid option for languages.
