how does Glossika know if you've learned a phrase?

Postby miket12 » Sat Feb 04, 2023 8:29 pm

I signed up for the 7-day free trial and did my first lesson on the web yesterday, today I'm doing review. I wonder if I haven't set something up correctly because I don't see how Glossika is deciding whether I've learned the phrase or not.

On their Guides page they have a link that says "watch our video" (it's not a video, its a webpage) at https://help.glossika.com/en/articles/3 ... ned-before but they don't really have a lot of detail about what you're supposed to be seeing.

My understanding is that Glossika uses a SRS approach and they say "In simplistic terms, Glossika's algorithms remember your performance over time to automate and optimize this process." But I don't see how it's doing that. When I did the review it simply showed me the same page I saw when learning with the English phrase at the top, the Italian phrase in the next box, and then a place to type the phrase. Given the correct answer is right there on the screen in front of me I don't see how Glossika is testing anything.

Is there some setup I'm missing? I expected they would cue me in English and then want me to type the phrase in Italian.

I emailed Glossika help and they were nice enough to reply. It looks like their program does not ever do reviews with English prompts for which you are expected to type in the correct response in the language you are learning.

I'm a bit disappointed by this. My understanding now of what Glossika does is present phrases multiple times in the learning phrase and then taper off the repetitions in the review phase under the assumption you have learned it.

Their materials talk about how they use their large database of records from seeing what users are actually doing in order to predict how difficult any phrase will be to a new learner. But I don't see how they can possibly do that since there's no button to "fail" a review to say you don't remember, nor do they appear to test what you've learned except possibly in the dictation portion of the review.
