Swiss German resources

Postby BrennoGold » Sat Dec 31, 2022 6:22 pm

Swiss German, the language very much known for lack of resources for its learners, is a language I have big interest in learning. I've already looked in this board's master list topic and only found standard German. I wonder if anyone here has any recommendations on anything useful.

I appreciate anything.
Thanks in advance!

Italki.com have some teachers that teach Swiss German.

EDIT
searching srf.ch for "schweizerdeutsch" brings up some articles, but other than a rather expensive picture dictionary, I didn't notice anything tangible.

EDIT2
Langenscheidt list a Schweizerdeutsch dictionary, but it seems to be out of print.

Unless you're already in or near Switzerland right now or have access to native speakers, you might want to postpone learning Swiss German until you've reached B2 in "standard German."

If you're into language immersion, you might find my thread about interesting Swiss movies and tv shows helpful.

I've found a textbook on Amazon, which looks promising:
Schweizerdeutsch leicht gemacht - S Schwiizerdüütsch vo Züri
The author is also offering private lessons via Teams.

Another popular textbook appears to be:
Züritüütsch verstaa, Züritüütsch rede - Ein nicht allzu stacheliger Mundartlehrgang

(Both textbooks focus on Swiss German as it's spoken in Zurich.)

I haven't used either of them, but one of my New Year's resolutions is to finally learn some Swiss German so that I can better understand my co-workers. :)

There's also Baur's Schwyzertüütsch - Praktische Sprachlehre des Schweizerdeutschen, which looks decent enough and can be found online.

Can we have a topic for Swiss German resources?
Yep! This is it. I've linked to this thread in the Master list of resources.

@BrennoGold you are the new owner of the Swiss German resources thread, congratulations. :D

It's great to see this. I'd love to see more on other German dialects as well! (Especially since I'm attempting to learn Standard German right now and hope to put it to good use.)

It would be a good idea to edit the subject of the first post from it's present "Can we have a topic for Swiss German resources?"- since we obviously can and now do, to just "Swiss German resources".

I don't want to steal anyone's thunder, but I was considering adding an addendum to the German resource thread I volunteered to run with dialects listed (with at least a few sample materials, nothing exhaustive). I can certainly leave Swiss German alone, if that is the consensus. I'm hoping to do some editing/revising of the German resource list soonish (probably over the summer) and list at least some Low German and Bavarian stuff I've run across.

I don't mean to widen the thread, but I would like to ask for anything anyone might know of for the following dialects I personally am interested in (mods/admins, you can move this particular part of my post to the German thread, if need be):
Palatine/Pfälzisch
Swabian/Schwäbisch
Franconian/Frankish
And I'd be interested in getting more for Low German and Bavarian as well (including Austrian German). And I know some of these are wide dialect groups. Whatever (if anything) is on offer (of a serious nature) is most appreciated. Contents in German is obviously fine (and expected).

And so that you know going in, I currently have found the following for Platt:
Platt mit Plietschmanns: Dat Plattdüütsch-Lihrbauk by Herr and Hohfmann
Uns Plattdüütsch Spraakbook by Kloock & Viechelmann
Platt - dat Lehrbook: Ein Sprachkurs für Erwachsene by Arbatzat
And I've run across this pdf for Bavarian. (I'm given to understand there is a (Eastern?) Frankish book just like this one, but it's not in pdf format that I can find, and out of print as best as I can tell.)
