ⲅⲉⲣⲓ, ⲫⲁ̄ⲓ̈, ⲟⲙⲓⲣ (Read, Write, Count!): Nubian books for beginners

Postby guyome » Sun Jul 24, 2022 8:19 pm

As part of the project ⲅⲉⲣⲓ, ⲫⲁ̄ⲓ̈, ⲟⲙⲓⲣ (Read, Write, Count!), Taras Press has published three (soon four) books aimed at beginner students of Nubian (Nobiin dialect).
Taras Press has a particular interest in Nubian languages as they have been used over the past millennium and a half, from Old Nubian to contemporary Nubian languages throughout Sudan and Egypt.

As a result, we are publishing four books alongside a number of Nubian learning materials. We've been supported by backers through our Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, which we've just shipped out (aside from "Sisters of the Water" which is still facing some delays) and we're now offering the books for sale to the public:

The books are also available for download free of charge.

"This is how we read Nubian" is an introduction to the Nubian alphabet, through the eyes of a brother and sister who meet scribe Yosefi in a magical cave.
Each letter is introduced with it's pronunciation and a memorable word in Nobiin or Andaandi starting with the letter, introducing basic familiarity with Nubian languages.
Nabra's Nubian Numbers, written by actor, musician and author Ramey Dawoud, is a first introduction to Nobiin Numbers for learners of all ages.
Nabra introduces each number with an important Nubian cultural reference that is linked to that number, whether music, games or art, helping learners of all ages to learn Nubian language and culture at the same time.
Set in a Nubia-inspired fantasy world, The Miracle of Amanirenas is the story of the founding of the Kingdom of Miggi, in which the Miggitan people look for a way to cope with (and ultimately resist) the tyranny of the emperor.
