Italian Pronunciation Textbook/Audio recommendations?

Postby AnthonyLauder » Fri Jun 04, 2021 1:28 pm

Can anybody recommend a really good textbook (ideally with audio) for Italian Pronunciation?

Ideally something pretty comprehensive, that could keep me occupied for a good few months?

-From what I've seen FSI courses offer much better pronunciation coverage than the typical course (which often has only a few pages at the beginning of the book). The German basic course has a "Notes on Pronunciation" section in most of the early lessons, including audio drills. For French they have a dedicated phonology course (meant to be completed before the Basic course). For Italian, it looks like they have some audio for pronunciation in the "Fast" course. Might be worth taking a look but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be nearly as thorough as what they have for French of German.

-Barron's has a "Pronounce it Perfectly in X" series and in general I think it's a pretty good series. The series did include Italian but alas it's no longer in print. (The French is still sold). You might be able to track it down somewhere but it's probably not worth paying for an expensive used copy. The audio would likely be in cassette format if available at all.

-There was a similar series, "How to Pronounce Italian Correctly." It also seems to be out of print.

-Forever Fluent sells "pronunciation trainers" and they do offer Italian. It's some sort of minimal pair training done on an app with SRS.

I haven't tried it but there's some commentary in the thread below.

-The Wikipedia article on Italian phonology has a lot of technical details. There are books with even more technical detail but unless you have some academic interest in the topic such texts probably aren't necessary.

I'm sure there's good material on the web but you might have to scrounge around it for it. For German, I found a number of good pronunciation videos on YouTube.

I know this post is a few weeks old, but I just joined the forum. The FSI Italian Programmatic course is dedicated almost entirely to pronunciation. Like all other FSI courses, it's free online. https://fsi-languages.yojik.eu/language ... ourse.html
