Automating Advice

Postby smallwhite » Sun Apr 04, 2021 4:34 pm

Just for fun but who knows. Let's make a Yes/No Flowchart or Personality Test-like test to give advice on what resource or approach to use.

Goal & time limit?
How much time per day at desk?
How much time per day commuting?
Daily tolerable screen time?
Into news or history or...?
$ budget?
Access to library?

and see how accurate we can make it. We're always asking those same questions anyway when someone asks for advice.

Data point 1

Q:
I am X. I learned Y. I decided to Z. Do you A? Is there B?

A:
master resource thread on this forum
/r/____ subreddit sidebar
Just make sure you have audio.
Frank Ilya's parallel texts...

I'm feeling confident we can automate advice.

"To learn Spanish on a budget...press 1. To do listening exercise for German in your lunch hour...press 4"

"Please hold. Your call is important to us."

"Below are frequently asked questions about our services (means we don't want to pay trained/experienced staff to actually assist you)."

I don't think I like automation. We've seen it's a failure and leads to frustration, blind-alleys and mis-guidance. I prefer interacting with people.

I feel that we give the same advice whatever the personal situation is, such that what advice an advice-seeker gets just depends on who decides to answer. I will always advise grammar study and never Silent Period, for example.

And most advice-seekers aren’t in any special situation that needs customised advice.

I plan to collect data more seriously, but the Resources Thread advice really illustrates my point.
