Minna no Nihongo: are any of those supplemental volumes worth it?

Postby tangleweeds » Thu Aug 06, 2020 7:37 pm

I just discovered that, aside from the main Japanese language volume and the corresponding English language translation/explanation book I already have, there are many supplemental volumes per level. Has anyone tried any/all of these? Which did you find helpful? I seem to thrive on massive textbook exposure, so I'm considering trying some, but which?

1) Somehow I already have the Kanji workbook, but not the corresponding Kanji explanation book in English.
2) There's both a listening practice volume and a reading practice volume. These both seem like good things.
3) There's a multi-CD package: Is that just CD-player versions of the MP3 disk that comes with the main textbook, or does it provide additional audio for exercises etc?
4) Have I missed any?

Update: I revisited the CD from the main Minna textbook and it is a regular audio CD, so the 5 CD set must contain additional material.

Also, there are two other workbooks I had missed. Here are descriptions of these from the site, as well as for those I mentioned above too, in case anyone finds this thread for reference

Hyojun Mondaishu - Basic Workbook
This is the workbook for use with Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Dai 2-Han Honsatsu (Minna no Nihongo Elementary I Second Edition Main Text). The book basically reviews what has been studied in each lesson. On page 2 of each chapter, there are review questions, and comprehensive review question sections are set after so many chapters. The book can be used for homework, reviewing or placement tests.

Bunkei Renshucho (described just as "Workbook")
A workbook that, through writing using the vocabulary and grammatical items found in Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Second Edition Main Text, allows the learner to firmly grasp what has been studied.

With illustrations, easy-to-understand charts, and diagrams, the book is visually stimulating, allowing the learner to more easily learn and reinforce beginner-level Japanese. Each chapter comes with a grammar check sheet.

Shokyu de Yomeru Topikku 25 - Reading Comprehension Text
A reading comprehension text that can be used right from the start of learning Japanese, this book covers a wide variety of topics in various formats, and simple exercises are also included to confirm the learner's level of comprehension. Beginning with practicing reading characters and numbers, the learner is then presented with various types of reading material, including notices, letters, interviews, quizzes and surveys.

Included in the separate booklet is a translation (in English, Chinese, Indonesian, Korean, Thai and Vietnamese) of any words not studied in the Main Text, plus an answer booklet and teacher's guide.

Chokai Tasuku 25 - Listening Comprehension Tasks
It is difficult to understand a foreign language when listening to it, especially at the early stages. Therefore, it is important to become used to listening to the sound of the language and then build up the ability to pick out important information though repeated listening. Through the task-based exercises (listening for necessary information in dialogues, interviews, reports, etc.) that make up this book, the learner can practice his/her communication skills while improving his/her listening comprehension. As the book has also been made to match the degree of progress of learners using Minna no Nihongo, they can also practice listening to the words and sentence patterns they have just studied.

The book comes with a translation (English, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese) of any vocabulary used in the book but not found in the Main Text. And for learners without a CD player, an App is available to hear the audio content on smartphones or tablets.

Kanji Eigo-Ban - Kanji - English Edition
This kanji textbook is designed for use with Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Second Edition Main Text. With this book, the learner studies how to use, read and write kanji through the concept of learning via the use of known words in familiar contexts, rather than by simply memorising kanji and learning how to write them.

A total of 536 kanji are studied in the two books in this series (220 kanji in this book one and 316 in book two), covering the kanji required for the N4 and N3 levels of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test and some of the kanji required for the N2 level.

Kanji Renshucho - Kanji Workbook
Here is a kanji workbook conforming to the kanji and vocabulary found in Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Second Edition Main Text. It covers 218 kanji commonly used in daily life. The book is structured so the learner first studies via kanji sheets, followed by reading practice and then writing practice, allowing for steady progression. Review tests are found every few chapters. The sheets being detachable and also having file punch holes, they can be detached from the book for separate study and then kept in a file.

CD 5 Mai Setto - 5 CD Set
Lower Beginner Audio Materials
The CDs include the Vocabulary, Sentence Patterns, Example Sentences, Renshu (Drills) A, B, C, etc., from Minna no Nihongo I Main Text. Please use these CDs, along with the CD accompanying the Main Text (containing the Conversations and Exercises found in the main texts), for instruction in class and for student practice.

*Please note that the CDs are in Japanese only.

There's even more, you can find them all here:
https://www.3anet.co.jp/np/en/list.html?sa=1&g=1&s=1
And that's just the first half of the elementary level. They've got all these for the second half of the elementary level too. :o
Thankfully (probably due to student attrition), the offerings for the intermediate levels are somewhat less profuse.

You can purchase them all here, either separately or as a massive expensive set (this is just the first half of the elementary level!):

I, for one, have all of the supplemental materials for MnN, and I'd say that if you have the funds to spend that amount of cash, it's a very good investment.

The "supplemental" CDs contain all of the Japanese from the main textbooks. If nothing else, I highly recommend getting them. That way you have all of the example sentences and drills on audio too. If you have any specific questions (and I might have missed them, as I couldn't read that all), don't hesitate to ask.

From the supplemental volumes, the ones I made more use of were the Hyojun Mondaishu (Basic Workbook) and the Chokai Tasuku 25 (Listening Comprehension Tasks).

The Hyojun Mondaishu is a workbook filled with questions to practise what you've learned in each chapter. Doing those exercises was really helpful and challenging. One of my favourite exercises (i think they only used it in the first volume) was to produce a sentence using the words that were given to you but... on top of that you were also forced to choose by yourself if the word needed a particle/postposition or not.

Chokai Tasuku 25 is, again, a workbook but with just listening tasks. I kind of wished there was some more workbooks for listening that didn't fall into the "practise for the JLPT Listening section". I think there isn't a lot of them that start from the bottom and gradually go up. :? Those workbooks that start from the very beginning and gradually go up are really helpful to train listening. And the one for Minna no Nihongo (just like the basic workbook) does things in a gradual manner really well since they use the vocabulary you learned in the chapter and, at the same time, re-use vocabulary you learned from previous chapters.

Just saying Thanks! to everyone who commented, that helps a lot. I do think I will try to accumulate as many of them as I can. I was at least able to get the Hyojun Mondaishu for $15 from Amazon.
