Hello everyone,
Im looking for a recommendation for a Hindi learning book. I'm a beginner, I just know some words and very very basic conversation.
I looked on the internet but I don't want to buy the wrong thing so I came here I would like a book:
- for beginners
- focusing on casual speaking
- with plenty of grammar so I can make my own sentences (and don't always have to use ready-made ones)
- Lots of exercises
I really hope someone can help me. My fiancé is Indian and I badly want to be able to communicate with his family ( and impress him ). Thankyou so much for your advice!!

Re: Hindi learning book
Teach Yourself Beginner's Hindi by Rupert Snell sounds like it's for you.
-More conversational, and everything is written in both devanagari and Latin scripts
-Plenty of grammar and exercises. In fact, I think it has more example sentences per unit than the full Teach Yourself Hindi books.
If you want to learn the script eventually, then Snell's Teach Yourself Hindi Script is great. If you want to get fully into the language further, than both his 1993 and 2000 editions of Teach Yourself Hindi are fantastic. The 2000 edition (white book) also includes extra worksheets for free download online through his "Hindi-Urdu Flagship" website from the University of Texas at Austin. I like the 1993 edition (black book) as well for its longer dialogues and extra practice with exercises.
Make sure you get the audio with any edition, as parsing the phonetic descriptions can be difficult - though you do have access to a native speaker, he might not want to (or be capable of) explaining subtle differences that are less obvious to a foreigner.
There is also a set of just audio by the same author branded as Teach Yourself Hindi Conversation, but it's exactly what you don't want - a bunch of canned sentences with minimal grammar explanation. I also hate that format (similar to Pimsleur) so I did not get much past disc 1 myself.

Thankyou so much. That's one of the ones I came across on the internet but I wasn't clear on whether it was really what I was looking for. I'm requesting it for my birthday!

Ashu from Hindi University goes through this book on Youtube, here is a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHPrXRi ... 9Cu0nAwqYN
He also provides free Zoom classes every Sunday.
Hope this helps, fellow Hindi learner!
