I name this the "official" LR discussion thread. For all the people out there that use the "listen-read" technique in their daily language learning routine, this thread is for you!
You can discuss what resources you use, which work best for you, which special spins you've created for the purpose of learning your target language, why you chose LR... the thread is open for you to make learning through this method as streamlined as possible!
As always, keep an air of decorum and respect while you discuss a topic like this. It's important, for everyone has different ways of approaching the listen-read philosophy.
Now with that out of the way, do discuss! I look forward to seeing the diverse array of contributions this thread has the wonderful possibility of being home to!

Re: LR (Listen-Read) Discussion Thread
Thank you for starting up a thread for this topic. As I recall, the information was scattered amongst various posts and hard to keep track of. I think it went something like this:
You need two copies of a very long book (or series of books book by one author?), one in your native language and one in your target language. You also need an audio-book of that book in your target language.
1) You read the book in your native language, so you are sure that you know the story.
2) You read the book in your native language while listening to the audio, all the way through. Try to match what you are reading with the parts on the audio, based on vocab words, sound effects, known phrases, etc.
3) You read the book in the target language while listening to the audio. You should have enough exposure from the previous step to follow along properly. Re-read the book, possibly two or three times.
Wasn't that the basic idea? I think you are supposed to produce the language when you feel comfortable, not rush it too early. You might even need another book or two before you really feel comfortable in the new language. Anyway, please correct me if I am wrong. I was excited to see this topic come up. I'm curious to hear people's experience with it.

I asked about LR in April: Did the Listening-Reading method work for you?RedBeardVII wrote:I'm curious to hear people's experience with it.
I'm still undecided whether to give LR a try...

This is how I learnt Swedish to a C1+ level within 700 hours. I used Anki too. But it took me three years since I used to read/listen 10 minutes per day only + 15 minutes for Anki. It depends on the language you want to learn. I don't recommend LR for acquiring languages who are syntactically very different to your languages. E.g. pairing up German and Japanese wouldn't work. But pairing up German and Swedish or Spanish would work like a charm.

Once upon a time I used to do this regularly - audio + parallel texts, up to six languages at a time:
