Subtitled videos in Uralic languages

To keep up the recent posts about videos with proper subtitles / closed captioning, here are some links for comparable material in Estonian, Finnish and Hungarian. As always with YouTube, you need to click on "CC" and select the relevant language to watch videos with the optional subtitles on. You can also watch movies on DVD or Netflix with the subtitles on although the latter is available only for Finnish and Hungarian as far as I know. Unfortunately, there is still relatively little in the way of suitable videos with subtitles for learners of Hungarian to say nothing of what's (not) out there for learners of Estonian and Northern Saami. The situation for Finnish is quite good in comparison, and in some ways is similar to what's available for learners of German with a national broadcaster offering some domestic programs with in the country's official languages as well as programs that use a simplified version of the language. I just couldn't find anything with subtitles in Northern Saami even though there is the daily televised news program Ođđasat in the language which is available online from each of the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish national broadcasters. Subtitles are available in Norwegian, Swedish or Finnish depending on the national origin of the broadcaster but not in Northern Saami.

ESTONIAN

N.B. To look for anything with Estonian subtitles, use "eesti subtiitritega", "eesti subtiitrid" or "Estonian subtitles" but much of the subtitled content that you'll find is of non-Estonian content translated for Estonian viewers. In contrast to Yle in Finland but like M1 and others in Hungary, streams and online shows from Estonian TV stations do not have closed captioning/Estonian subtitles.

FINNISH

News / Documentaries / Educational videos

- Supisuomea (complementary videos for a beginners' textbook of the same name which recently went out of print but is still available on the second-hand market)

- Yle Uutiset selkosuomeksi (abbreviated daily news broadcasts done in simplified Finnish - meant for learners as well as newcomers to Finland)
- Kotimaiset luontodokumentit (nature documentaries with the most recent videos being geoblocked but those released over a year ago are open to anyone)
- Akuutti (a lifestyle show about health and well-being)

Series / Miscellaneous

- Pasila (The first 3 seasons (2007-2009) of the original animated comedy series which ended in 2013)
- Ellan matkassa (2 seasons of a travel show with Ella Kanninen)
- Playlist of "Lapin Keino" (Lapin Keino "Way of Lapland" is a public relations/advocacy initiative that promotes Finnish Sápmi).

N.B. It could be worth spending an afternoon to find out what's available to you on Yle as there's good variety in the shows available ranging from news to children's shows. The links above from Yle are only what I was able to see for myself by poking around the website. No doubt that there are other subtitled programs which could interest you. Be aware that because Finnish and Swedish are official languages in Finland, Yle also airs some programs in Swedish such as Strömsön parhaat vinkit ("Strömsö's Best Tips"). Subtitles available for these programs are offered in Swedish (as programtextning) or as translations to Finnish (as käännöstekstitys). When a video has the option for subtitles, you will see a speech bubble on the bottom right of the viewer. Once you click on this speech bubble, click on "ohjelmatekstitys" (program subtitle) to turn on the Finnish subtitles for the whole video since the default setting is for subtitles to be off or in the case of something with non-Finnish speech, the Finnish subtitles will come on only when that non-Finnish speech turns up.

In general, when looking for suitable videos with subtitles, use "Finnish subtitles", "suomi tekstitys" or "selkokieli" as keywords. YouTube has some movies and short videos with Finnish subtitles.

HUNGARIAN

- Easy Hungarian
- Hungarian Lessons with Zsuzsi (the playlist's videos are in descending order - the last video in the list is the first lesson)
- Learn Hungarian with Video from HungarianPod101.
- Magyar TED Talks (playlist) (despite my disdain for TED and TEDx, some of these presentations in Hungarian do come with subtitles in Hungarian and so could be useful for improving listening comprehension).

N.B. There are hundreds of non-Hungarian videos (e.g. American movies, Turkish soap operas, K-pop videos) available for viewing on YouTube with Hungarian subtitles. They're either emblazoned right on the screen or switchable with the "CC" button on the bottom of the viewer. Just search with "feliratos", "magyar felirattal" or "hun SUB" and you'll get lots of hits. However, Hungarian videos online with proper Hungarian subtitles are quite rare. Unlike Finnish channels and some German ones on the internet, the Hungarian channels which can be streamed or watched as uploads on their official YouTube pages rarely come with subtitles to accommodate natives who are hearing-impaired or learners. You'll need to do the work yourself by matching Hungarian videos with Hungarian subtitles using OpenSubtitles or similar.
