I am sure YouTube has been posted here, but when you do a search on a topic of your interest, do the search in your target language once you have achieved an intermediate level.

For example, a few minutes ago, I was looking for the best camera settings to take night videos on a DSLR camera, I watched a few English videos, the I thought about doing it on Italian so I did the following, which allowed me to learn about the topic of my interest while having contact with Italian language, see this results in YouTube bellow.

Yes, this is a great idea!

I try to do this on Google sometimes too, but it often "helpfully" translates my search query back into English. For example, I'll try to search for the L2 title of a book, and it will just show me results about that book in English

Yes, this is very useful to do, thanks for a great example!

To improve the results a bit and avoid "helpful" translations to English, it is a good thing to open the settings and check the languages of searching. It still won't help much. I still get en.wikipedia articles first, even when searching in a different language and about something I logically expect to be the most described in the target language.

For Youtube, it is great that it remember your searches and tastes. The hardest thing to do is to start. After that, it will even suggest you other videos in your target languages. But takes a bit of time.

As was mentioned above, even when you have your Google search set for your target language, you get far too many English pages. There is an easy way to reduce the English results. For example, with the search language set for Dutch to search for "vis" (fish), you still get mostly English results. However, do the search with a "-the" requesting Google to omit pages with "the". That greatly improves an L2 search. So search like this:

vis -the

That is much better. But it still gets some English and other language results, so add the Dutch definite article "het" (the).

vis -the het

That gets you almost pure Dutch results. So exclude very common words (using a minus sign) from English and other languages you don't want, and include common words (such as definite articles) from your target language search.

If you're getting to many English results it might be because of the "order of preference" in your web browser for languages. For example if your preference is EN, IT, FR. It will show English Wikipedia before Italian or French. To re-order the preference in Firefox for example there are some instructions here:

Thanks for awesome tips, Tommus and Rdearman!

It looks like I am struggling a bit too much because of using Safari, and it is a miracle I can search in various languages at least to some extent (the Google settings help at least for the search engine). Searching for a solution only gives me answers suggesting I can just switch the language of the whole Macbook, and definitely not create a list of languages sorted by my preference. Not sure why I switched from Firefox to Safari some time ago.

I mainly use Youtube for classical music, not for language stuff (which of course is foolish of me, but that's how it is to have two competing hobbies).

I have however noticed some problems with the search mechanism in Youtube. If you want to restrict your search you would normally just add an extra term, but in Youtube you then risk getting more hits based solely on the extra term than hits based on both terms. Inspired by Google I have of course tried using apostrophes and minus signs, but even when I explicitly ask NOT to have hits corresponding to a certain term the mere mention of a term in the search string will cause an avalanche of results with precisely that term in their descriptions. You would have thought the programmers could have learnt from their collegues at Google (which operates under the same umbrella), but no.

On the plus side Youtube is very good at finding synonyms - though at times it is too good at it. For instance I can search for sinfonias by a certain composer spelled in Italian and then I also get the symfonier and symphonies and Symphonien and симфонии of that person, but I have as a side effect also discovered some interesting and quite unknown stuff when the beast didn't have more direct hits and then continued with a mix of near hits and some totally irrelevant results by composers I didn't ask for. Or works that definitely couldn't defined as symphonies.

As for searching in your target languages: well, if you want results in a certain language you'll probably get them (insofar there are any), but the problem is again that it is difficult to exclude all the irrelevant things. And here I'm talking about the search result lists and not the motley concoction presented at the right side of the screen. But using your target language is still the best (and maybe only) way to break out of the Anglophone bubble.

In Google, where the search terms (including the language possibilities under 'advanced search') are taken more seriously, I constantly use the technique to find interesting texts.
