How many words do you know?

"Test your receptive and productive vocabulary in different languages.

The vocabulary tests aim to assess participants' vocabulary knowledge on levels of 1000 words each. These levels are based on high-frequency vocabulary lists. The 5000 most frequent words of German, English, Spanish, Russian, Italian, French, Japanese, Chinese, and American English can be tested. The results indicate the corresponding reading levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

What percentage of the 5000 most frequent words have you mastered?"

Confucius Launches Chinese Online Test and Programs

Language Magazine
January 2, 2018

The Confucius Institute and XuetangX have launched a platform for students around the world who want to learn Chinese and pass the HSK proficiency tests. The courses are available at Beginners can register and access the course HSK Tsinghua Chinese: Start Talking with 1.3 Billion People.

The most attractive part of this course is the fact that it is closely connected with the HSK tests. There are exercises for the tests at the end of each unit. After completing the program, students who get more than 60% will receive an HSK (Level I and II) score report issued by Chinese Testing International (CTI).

HSK is China’s only standardized test of Chinese language proficiency for nonnative speakers. The new six-level HSK test was launched by Hanban in an effort to better serve Chinese language learners. It is the result of coordinated efforts by domestic and foreign experts from different disciplines including Chinese language teaching, linguistics, psychology, and educational measurement.

According to the president of XuetangX, Li Chao, “For months, our company and the Confucius Institute have been working together with the University of Tsinghua to enable the study of Mandarin in a simple and modern format. Research shows that students listen to lectures more attentively if they have been given a problem or task to solve before the lecture. In this regard, the structure that most MOOCs have—short video lectures alternating with assignments and quizzes—is perfect.”

XuetangX is a leading platform for lifelong learning, with more than nine million registered users. ... -programs/

How about MOOC courses such as the ones available for free on Or the China equivalent,, also free.

The second one has standalone courses and also courses that go with specific textbooks, such as "Contemporary Chinese" by Wu Zhongwei and "HSK Standard Course 1" by Jiang Liping. HSK Standard course is also the book on which course is based on, plus this tends to be the book of choice in many Confucius Institutes. Youtube has another free course based on these series, He has done the course for books 1-4.

I am myself quite fond of "Integrated Chinese", a textbook of choice in many US schools. The best part of this material is the workbook, which gives the student an ample amount of practice (answers are available as well for those doing self study). It is great to use together with this playlist:

Hope this helps.

Hi, I'd like to tell you guys about Mediacorpdrama. They uploaded part of their collection in YouTube. Most of their dramas have soft Closed Captions in both English and Chinese (Simplified). However, this is more useful if you're interested in Mandarin with Singapore / Malaysian accent.

I'd like to contribute the videos of GoEast Mandarin, an online Chinese school. They have a YouTube series in which they show spoken Chinese. Each episode shows a word; sample phrases and then an explanation.

Regarding the reference in the first post to this course:
To me it just looks like bibliographic information, I can't find a way to actually access it. Did something change in the meantime? Maybe I am just blind.
