OK, so I promised myself I would not wanderlust into any new language at this point in time. However, it has now been decided that we will spend part of the summer exploring Malta, and I would like to get at least a small taste of Maltese before going there. I have of course searched for resources on the internet, but with limited success.
I found the page of Alain de Raymond called Learn Any Languages where he has a video course in Maltese for beginners. Sure, he seems to have a decent command of the language, and I've discovered he has also published a couple of e-books on Maltese which I found on Amazon. As they are not expensive I will probably give them a try.
I also know there is a Teach Yourself Maltese book out there, but it is old and from the reviews I've seen it is more of a reference grammar than a real language course. As far as I can tell there is no Assimil or Colloquial course.
Do any of you have any other tips about Maltese resources? Mind you, not that I am actually going to study Maltese..

Re: Maltese language resources
You Europeans are so lucky to have so many different countries and languages at your doorstep. Maltese looks fascinating. Your post inspired me to do a little research and I found this article about Maltenglish/Maltingliz interesting. With English being official, and secondary education being in English, the vast majority of Maltese are also fluent in English. So, naturally, like Gibraltar with Llanito and the Southwest with Spanglish, the Maltese often mix in English in their speech.
I did a search on HTLAL and found this:
The link to Merhba Bik (1997) is from an Italian bookseller at Amazon UK for £17.47- with CD. Perhaps searching in Italian may be useful for you. Also, I found the link to Il-Kunsill Nazzjonali tal-Ilsien Malti/National Council of the Maltese Language available in both Maltese and English.
Being able to introduce one's self, greet and thank people, order in a restaurant and ask directions is a laudable goal well within the reach of most experienced learners here. Having studied Arabic and speaking Italian and English as you do, plus having learned a language like Romantsch with few resources, you are set up well for this... if you can find any useful resources. Good luck, Ogrim!

Maltese for Foreigners Syllabus downloads A1, A2, B1- scroll down for links.
Finally, here's the link to the author of Maltese for Foreigners website which also seems to be available with an Italian base as well.

Re: Maltese language resources
Thank you for those links, iguanamon. You're better at researching the internet than I am .
To the extent I am going to dabble in Maltese it will certainly be at a basic tourist level. I do not want to mess up my progress in Arabic by introducing Maltese at this stage. From what I've seen so far there are a lot of grammatical similarities between Maltese and Arabic, and as I struggle with verb conjugation and other features of Arabic I am afraid starting with Maltese now could confuse me a lot.
(The fact that Maltese is written with Latin script does make it easier though...)
Still, it is a fascinating language, with its Arabic/Semitic base and its heavily Romance-influenced vocabulary. I had a quick look at the news site iNews Malta and I believe I can make sense of at least some headlines purely from the abundance of words of Romance/Italian/Sicilian origin, like this one:
Obviously this has to mean Parliament approves law on domesitc violence - 10 MPs from the Opposition votes with the Government.

This guy on Tumblr is from Malta. He posts about his language on his blog. There's not a lot of posts but you might find something useful.
