Please Vote to Select the August 2018 LLF Book Club Read

Postby Mohave » Thu Jul 12, 2018 3:07 am

Please vote to select the LLF Book Club Read for August 2018. Thanks again to everyone who provided reading recommendations. The Poll will remain open for three days. Each person can vote twice - allowing you to choose your favorite and a "runner-up". We may or may not have have a run-off vote depending on vote distribution. I was only able to create a Poll in a new topic for some reason - and not in the existing Book Club Thread. If I missed something, please tell me how. Meanwhile to get this started, I'll link this Poll back to the LLF Book Club Thread.

I tried to put the GoodReads links into the actual Poll, but the forum software did not allow it. Here's GoodReads links for each of the recommendations.

La Ciudad de las Bestias- Isabel Allende
Un barrage contre le pacifique - Marguerite Duras
L'amica Geniale - Elene Ferrante
Se Questo è un Uomo - Primo Levi
My Name is Red - Orhan Pamuk
Out Stealing Horses - Per Peterson
The Bridge on the Drina - Ivo Andrić
Norwegian Wood - Haruki Murakami
Vingt Mille Lieues Sous Les Mers - Jules Vernes
La Neige était Sale - Georges Simenon

Thanks for putting up a poll. You're correct the you can only make a poll as the first post in a new thread.

I made my vote :) I propose we keep top runners up as the basis for next months poll, along with some fresh ideas that are sure to be generated in the course of the month.

If anyone who wants to participate realizes a selection isn't available (or at a reasonable price...) In their desired language, could you post it? We could always re-poll or go with the runner up if it were going to leave someone/too many people out.

It looks like La Ciudad de las Bestias- Isabel Allende will be the August 2018 LLF Book Club selection.

We had four books that were grouped closely for second place. We can keep these for consideration of a future September vote along with other recommendations, or we can do a run-off now with these four books only for September. One advantage of doing the run-off now may save on shipping if you plan to order out-of-country. Please share your thoughts.

Maybe keep these four, but provide a week for adding new suggestion?

Looks like one can get the German language trilogy for less than 10€ :

I like the idea of deciding future books ahead of time so we have plenty of time to get them, but I agree with Kanewai that we should add more suggestions. Another idea would be to choose the books for a few months in advance by taking the top two or three books in the poll.

I like the idea that we choose all the top three books for the next three months, that way we can order all of them straight away.

As for the rest - I'd like to read all the suggested books, but of course I voted for only one of them (although I did notice afterwards that I could have voted for two). Consequently, I wouldn't mind if any or all of the other books came up in a future poll. On the other hand, there are lots of other great books out there too... let's see how many new suggestions we get.

Thanks for the great input. Based on the above comments, let's take the top four books that were in second place from the last poll and open up nominations again for additional recommendations to select September and October 2018 LLF Book Club reads. This will allow combined shipping if you need to order from another country.

I'd like to keep all the nominations in the Book Club thread - so I'll Link/re-post post over there. I'd also appreciate any nominations include a link for the book to Goodreads, if possible. This allows everyone to easily check editions for their target language availability. If there is a nomination for which is either cost-prohibitive or not available in one of your target languages, please let us know. We really want to ensure everyone that wants to participate can participate.

This is for August, so it's closed already ... I think the September poll will come out soon. The idea is to have enough lead time so that we can find the books for each month.
