Are -тся and -ться homophones in Russian? They sound the same to me but I always suspected that the problem is I haven't trained my ear enough. In fact to me they both almost sound like ца, essentially.

Yes, there's no phonetical difference whatsoever (and ца is indeed the correct pronunciation). Same about ш/шь. In verbs you determine the correct spelling by asking questions like что делать? что делает? что делаешь?

Thanks Serpent. It's good to know my ears weren't failing me! It's funny that I've been trying to pronounce -ться as /tʲsja/ this whole time.

Wait, is ш always soft then (equivalent to Polish ś), or is it just at the end of a word that ш and шь are homophones? I remember when I heard the word дача recently it really sounded like daća to my Serbian/Polish-attuned ears...

ш is always hard, щ is always soft (like ś).

Looks like it has to be a hoax, but still.

That's hilarious and sad at the same time.

For example, I know one famous forum which is for Russian teachers of English. All these teachers are arrogant, bossy, and look down on students and undergraduates, who are just beginning to study how to teach English. But all of these experienced teachers are so illiterate in their mother-tongue! Oh, what a shame. Such mistakes, like «нету», «получаеться», which they are doubling from message to message. How can one teach a foreign language, if they don't know their native language?

Remember an old English saying; "empty barrels make the most sound" and just get over that and carry on.

When writing on the web with a small screen, weird fonts, tiny interface or keyboard, in a hurry... you can do a lot of mistakes...
