German Book Club/ Tintenherz read-along

Postby Elenia » Tue Jan 12, 2016 8:50 pm

Hello, fellow German learners. Cavesa, Brun Ugle, gsbod and I have all decided to dust off our copies of Tintenherz by Cornelia Funke for a read-along. I've created this thread so that we have a dedicated place to talk about the book, and so that other forum members can find about it or get involved if they so wish.

The read-a-long starts today, with the aim of having the first chapter, 'Ein Fremder in der Nacht', finished by Sunday the 15th. If you have a copy sitting on your bookshelf, or if you are looking for your next German read, feel free to get involved.

We are [lit: should be] currently reading chapter twenty!

---

Notes: We haven't got any plans for once we're finished with this book, but if others are interested I'd be happy to take/give suggestions for books we can tackle next. Also, I've put this in the Multilingual Room because I'm not sure where else it could go. Posts in German are welcome, but not mandatory. If you can, please try to provide a translation for any non-German speakers who might be lurking... and me. Mostly me.

Hello,
I already followed your intention of reading Tintenherz in Cavesa's log and though I would not really join your reading (firstly, I'm already native to german, secondly I already read the book (which is awesome!), but mainly because I already read two books right now (song of ice and fire in german and HP 1 in french))
What I am here for is to offer you help with anything you might not understand while reading, as my native language is german. So I'll be lurking around and if questions arise I am very happy if I can help ;)

And now: Have fun with the book!

Thank you, Komma! I've been trying to read this book for over a year now, so I'm excited. I would like to add that any native speakers who don't mind being slowed down by us, or who just want to chat about the book, are more than welcome. The more, the merrier :D

You gals are tempting me into yet another reading! I was planning to join "Como agua para chocolate" with German-Spanish and now comes Tintenherz for which there is a film yet. That's exactly what I need, reading fiction in German out of my daily routine. If only I can make it and squeeze in time for this!

I just finished reading the first chapter. I'd L-R'd it before, but without understanding much. My comprehension has somehow massively improved, without me doing much work. I can now see just how different my English translation is to the original! How are you all going? Enjoying it so far?

Just in case anyone is hovering on the fence about joining, I got my copy on iBooks. This means you can start immediately without having to wait weeks for your book to arrive. It also makes looking up words very easy.

And the book is pretty easy in general and we're only doing a chapter a week at the moment. Surely you have time for that, Expugnator!

I'm almost done the first chapter. I couldn't read much yesterday because I'd had trouble sleeping the night before. When I haven't slept, the whole book looks like it's written in German. "It is in German!" you say? True, but I don't usually notice that so much when I'm reading.

Normally I only read the logs and that motives me a lot. I did not write anything on this forum yet (maybe one time?), but when I saw that you started to read this book, I couldn't remain silent. So, I am reading along with you and I finished the first chapter. I also use the audiobook. As a native Dutch speaker, I can understand German quite well. I did learn some new interesting words, like das Schaukelpferd and der Maulwurf. I look forward to the second chapter.

(Corrections are welcome / Verbesserungen sind willkommen)
