Italiano Dantesco

Postby Cosimo » Tue Mar 29, 2022 11:38 pm

Hi, in this topic i would talk about an ancient form of italian that is speak by Dante Alighieri. I don't know this kind of italian (and I'm italian) and in the web I read it is an extinct lenguage, but it is close to italian and I can rebuild some of that.

(Modern Italian)
Concerning your offspring, you are not made to live as brutes, but to follow virtue and knowledge (perhaps English?)

In the middle of the walk of our live, I become found myself among a darkness forest, that the right way was lost

Ahi quanto a dir qual era è cosa dura

this forest is so wild that the remember of it make me fear

Tant’è amara che poco è più morte;
dirò de l’altre cose ch’i’ v’ho scorte.

It is so bitter that little more is equal to death, but if i can talk about the good that I find there, I talk about the other things that i found there.

Io non so ben ridir com’i’ v’intrai,

I don't be able to say how I come in, I was so sleepy in that moment that I left the right way

Then I arrived at the base of a hill, where the valley finish, that valley that filled up of fear my heart

I looked high and I saw the hill shape, illuminated by the sun rays that go to every hill

then the fear subsided

----------------------------------------------------------WORK IN PROGRESS-----------------------------------------------------------------

E come quei che con lena affannata,
uscito fuor del pelago a la riva,
si volge a l’acqua perigliosa e guata,

così l’animo mio ch’ancor fuggiva,

che di pel macolato era coverta;

mosse di prima quelle cose belle;
sì ch’a bene sperar m’era cagione
di quella fiera a la gaetta pelle

l’ora del tempo e la dolce stagione;

Mentre ch’i’ rovinava in basso loco,
dinanzi agli occhi mi si fu offerto
chi per lungo silenzio parea fioco.

Quando vidi costui nel gran diserto,
«Miserere di me,» gridai a lui,
«qual che tu sii, od ombra od omo certo!»

Rispuosemi: «Non omo, omo già fui,
e li parenti miei furon lombardi,
mantoani per patria ambedui.

Nacqui sub Iulio, ancor che fosse tardi,
e vissi a Roma sotto ’l buono Augusto

ch’è principio e cagion di tutta gioia?»

«Or se’ tu quel Virgilio e quella fonte
che spandi di parlar sì largo fiume?»,
rispuos’io lui con vergognosa fronte.

«O de li altri poeti onore e lume,
vagliami ’l lungo studio e ’l grande amore

Vedi la bestia per cu’ io mi volsi;
aiutami da lei, famoso saggio,
ch’ella mi fa tremar le vene e i polsi».

Hey there! I'm only starting to learn Italian so this is fascinating. Here are some corrections to your English.

In the middle of the walk of our live, I found myself among a darkness forest, that the right way was lost
In the middle of the walk (journey?) of our life, I found myself among a forest of darkness, that the right way was lost

this forest is so wild that the remember of it make me fear
this forest is so wild that the mere memory/remembrance of it renews the fear

It is so bitter that little more is equal to death, but if i can talk about the good that I find there, I talk about the other things that i found there.
It is so bitter that a little more is equal to death, but by talking about the good that I found there, I talk about the other things that I found there.

I don't be able to say how I come in, I was so sleepy in that moment that I left the right way
I'm not sure how I came in, I was so sleepy in that moment that I left the right way/main route/main path

Then I arrived at the base of a hill, where the valley finished, that valley that filled up of fear my heart
Then I arrived at the base of a hill, where the valley ended, that valley which filled my heart with fear

I looked high and I saw the hill shape, illuminated by the sun rays that go to every hill
I looked up and saw the shape of the hill, illuminated by the sun rays that went straight to every hill

allora la paura si fece quieta, (???)
then the fear subsided

I hope this is helpul, looking forward to the rest :D

If you take into consideration that Dante died more than 700 years ago (in 1321) it's surprising that his Commedia isn't harder to read - even for an abject non-native reader like me. I did the Inferno and the beginning of Purgatorio long ago during my study years in the 70s, and for the purpose I used an annotated version at the institute library - otherwise the numerous references to historical (and classical) persons and events would have been a serious obstacle - but not the language itself. For a native Italian it should be fairly easy to read his works if we only consider the language itself, though the obscure references might still be slightly bothersome..

Seeing a modern version and the old one (plus an English translation) side by side is quite interesting, and I wish Cosimo luck with his project. But I have noticed a few things, like for instance the translation of

ché la diritta via era smarrita.

as

In the middle of the walk of our live, I become found myself among a darkness forest, that the right way was lost

Wouldn't it be more precise to translate "qué" as "because" or "as" or "since" here?

And..

Tant’è amara che poco è più morte;

It is so bitter that little more is equal to death,

Here my preferred translation would be "that death is little more" (which corresponds to a reading like "che (la) morte è poco più")

As for
Then I arrived at the base of a hill, where the valley finished, that valley that filled up of fear my heart
Then I arrived at the base of a hill, where the valley ended, that valley which filled my heart with fear

.. i think it would be easier just to write ... "where the valley ended, which had filled my heart with fear"

In Karma's message from 1:05 pm just above the doubtful "???" shouldn't be necessary - the second translation seems to me to be absolutely correct.
