Please help me check my Russian grammar

Postby yeowhh » Tue Jan 29, 2019 7:00 am

Hello there,

I encountered the following exercise from the website, learnrussian.rt.com

However, there's no answer key for me to verify the answer. I'd appreciate if someone could point out any mistakes that I made with the verb “жить” (to live) and state the correct answer. Thank you.

Here no error, but for russian this sentence sounds a little weird.
"Здесь жили наши родители." It's better sound.

Здесь нет ошибки, но по-русски это звучит немного странно.
"Здесь жили наши родители." Это звучит лучше.

Does it not depend of the original question (if there was a question)?
Где жили ваши родители? / Кто жил здесь?

There is a question in the OP's list - "Кто здесь жил раньше?" By default "(раньше) здесь жили наши родители" is the better fit here.

In the spoken language "Наши родители жили здесь" could also technically be used as an answer to the same question, but you'd have to place extra vocal emphasis on "Наши родители" and, depending on the tone of your emphasis, there could be various implications, like that you don't consider the answer to the question all that important ("Our parents, if insist on knowing") or that you're only starting the list of previous residents with the parents ("Our parents lived here, and before them it was our great-uncle's family, and before them...").

Also you can write like "Наши родители жили здесь..." sometime.
Наши родители жили здесь 10 лет назад.
Or
Наши родители жили здесь в лучшие времена.
Or
Наши родители жили здесь, когда я был ребенком.
Or you can add why they lived there
Наши родители жили здесь потому, что им очень нравился этот район.

I'm sorry if I do errors in English. My English is not so good ☺️
