Spanish: Grammar Glue Words [Language hacking]

Postby SGP » Sat Nov 03, 2018 3:59 pm

This thread is about all those neat words that glue one part of a Spanish sentence to each other.

(It took me a little while to figure out how this forum works exactly. So I already mentioned something about those words in my log, but this subforum is more suitable, I'd say.)

Words collected so far:

y, pero, que, aunque, mientras,
sin, sin embargo, [desde/-] luego, entonces,
antes, adelante, con, en, cualquier, mientras tanto, aun,
algo, por, para, siempre, además, luego de.

Any others that come to your minds (other than those that "nobody" uses nowadays, neither in everyday speech nor elsewhere ;))?

[EDIT: This query only is about those words that you can recall without even thinking for too long about it. That way, we could collect those that are the most used in everyday conversations (both spoken and written). So this query in reality ;) neither is about grammar explanations containing a great quantity of those, nor word frequency lists. Instead, it is about something even more practical.]

You're looking "connecting" or "transitional" or "linking" words (conectores).

Yes the word conectores is a major piece of that puzzle. ;)
But I am still trying to flesh things out a bit, you know, optimizing them.

If someone (especially when he is learning Spanish without memorizing anything) would try to learn all of these words at once, or also some, then pausing, then others... things could be a bit more difficult than it would be possibly when using a different approach.

For that very reason, I mentioned some of those that I was able to recall without even thinking a lot about them. Because that way, one can remind oneself of those that are even more often used than others.
And that was my motivation, too, when I asked the other members whether they know some more. ;)
Long story short, this query is especially about what is called language hacking.
(For those of you who are unfamiliar with this term: it hasn't got anything to do with what is commonly associated with this "hacking" term on its own).

So I wanted, and still want it, too, to break down the Spanish grammar a bit, focusing on the very core of these Grammar Glue Words first. ;)

[Also, I am aware of the presence of frequency lists. Even those often aren't enough real-world-ish ;) for my purposes. Because there is a multitude of methods for making such a list. Some are related to subtitles, others to online sources, etc. But I am striving for the most realistical and practical experience possible. :D ]

Now this is exactly what this thread is about.
Gracias a ti.

And yes, this query is for both advanced learners and beginners.
Especially beginners sometimes wouldn't even have heard of those Grammar Glue Words that are very Low Frequently Used. So that's why it is definitely for all learners.

[EDIT: Just added the contributed words to my first post. This is also what I want to do every time someone contributes a few of the words matching the query. That way, it should be easier for everyone to know whether certain words already have been mentioned or not.]

Added all of those four.
@all: The quest isn't finished yet. ;)
But this notice of mine is less about asking, more about simply informing.
Whoever would like to provide some more words (after having read the first post ;)) is welcome to do so.
But not rushing anyone, neither myself nor others.

Thank you so much! That is not only helpful for my Spanish, but the organization of words is helpful to apply to my Creole studies. This is very timely.

I'd like to point out this is a bit of reinventing the wheel, as is being discussed on the French version of the thread.

I wholeheartedly recommend:
https://spanish.kwiziq.com/revision/gra ... epositions (free, sorted by level, good explanations and examples, conjonctions incuded on the same list as the prepositions)
or Gramatica de Uso del Espanol, mostly units 92-105, but many others would fit this thread too.

Really, no "language hacking" involved, just normal learning.
